Hate crimes-violence aimed at individuals because they are members of a particular group-were once considered the rare illegal actions of a small but vocal assortment of extremists who thrived on hating minorities. No more. In this new book by two of the country's leading experts on hate crimes, published ten years after their classic book of the same name, these most-recognized authorities and media commentators reinterpret this scourge of our generation-hatred based on race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, and even citizenship. In the aftermath of the worst act of terrorism in this country's history-the bombing of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001-the authors probe the causes and characteristics of such acts of hatred and, most vitally, their consequences for all of us.

Just Don't Bother
By AWK 7
This book is garbage, all of the information is ancient and irrelevant to an issue as enigmatic and shape-shifting depending on context, egos, identity, et cetera. I read this for a class and was thoroughly insulted by the content; it was as if Levin and McDervitt decided that research really just wasn't important anymore. While this book certainly doesn't claim to be scholarly work, it just isn't even worth the paper its printed on.
These two supposed "experts" are also flagrant apologists and their ignorance of structural violence, systemic oppression systems, intersecting identities, or even just transphobic violence is astonishing to say the least. You are better off reading Audrey Smedley's Race in North America and watching "Black and Gold."

Interesting read
By CrimPrincess
Despite the fact I had to read this for my hate crimes class, I actually enjoyed it because of the interesting research behind hate crimes and cases studies that are presented. The chapters aren't too long and easy to comprehend. A recommended read not just for criminal justice or criminologist students, but for anyone interested in the subject of hate crimes.
