Excellent book on Paul's life and historical afterlife.

Though not primarily a scholar of early Christianity, over the years I've been impressed by Paul and by the scholars who've sought to disentangle him from his unhelpful "disciples"; such scholars include J.D. Crossan and Marcus Borg, associated with the Jesus Seminar circle and Robert Anderton-Kelly, influenced by the valuable anthropological ideas of Rene Girard. Armstrong belongs more with the former group than the Girardians. What I find especially useful in this book is her account of how the institutional heirs of Paul corrupted step by step the egalitarian thrust of Paul's original message exploiting, among other things, the latent conqueror frame that Paul himself employed in one of his authentic letters (his description of the Parousia of Christ). Bravo, Karen Armstrong!

Karen Armstrong a keen student of the Pauline corpus provides a concise and informative biography on the most famous apostle

Karen Armstrong, a former nun, is well known for her many books on religions and important religious figures from Jesus to Buddha to Muhammed. In this short book she examines the life and career of Paul. The book is well written, clearly stated and can be read with understanding by general readers.
Paul as born in Tarsus; converted on the Damascus Road and became a Christian missionary to the Gentile world. He traveled widely and wrote with profound wisdom and love. Among the places he visited in the Roman Empire were Thessalonica, Ephesus, Corinth, Athens Galatia and many other cities in the vast reaches of mighty Rome's imperial hegemony. Paul was not the woman hated which he has been accused of being by some theologians. Many of the false ideas about Paul come from pseudo-Pauline letters contained in the New Testament such as the letters to Timothy, and Titus. This is an excellent book which can be used with both laypersons and church professionals. Good work by a liberal scholar

Armstrong's Insights

I enjoy Armstrong's work even though she sometimes writes so as not to offend. I believe with St. Paul she establishes that the very earliest Christians looked to their religion to save them from the relentless, harsh, cruel times in which they lived. Paul walked and worked in these times, and as Armstrong explains he took it upon himself to help those less enlightened to make it through the night until Jesus returned. Unfortunately Jesus did not/has not returned, and those who came to power within the church saw fit to re-interprete Paul's teachings. Both to reflect the time and place they lived as well to gain power for themselves. That said I will add that Armstrong brings this all to the reader's attention in well researched and uncomplicated prose. And will most likely offer the reader new insights.
