Very good book to get a glimpse of life in the U.S. I bought it a year ago, I currently live in the U.S. and has helped me to be clear about some aspects of the life and customs of this country.

The book contains most, if not all of the indispensable stuff a Spaniard (or pretty much anyone) should know when considering relocating to the US. It will surely save you a lot of trouble! :)

What the book title says

The book is precisely a manual for having the move to the US to be a right move. It gives a lot of good advice, structured and organized. It tells you what you need to do first and suggest the next moves. I have not seen anything similar to be able to compare but I think it is a good guide. I feel it could go a bit further and that the views presented are from a small group probably living in the same area. Some generalizations cannot be easily made in such a large and diverse country but let's remember that the author is not a professional in the field and most of the contents is based in own or close experiences

I can't even tell you how much I love this cookbook

I can't even tell you how much I love this cookbook!! Someone had recommended it a while back but when I flipped through it the store, I wasn't impressed. Honestly, no pictures hardly, I love pictures in a cookbook. Oh well, look past all that. This is a cookbook for people who want to know why a recipe works and why it may not. Every recipe is explained in detail and everything I have prepared has turned out beyond excellent. Especially the baking recipes! Explains room temperature butter vs cold vs 65 degrees and what each will yield in baking. the list goes on and on! This is for all nerd cooks!

If you only own one cookbook, this should be it: 2,000 of the best recipes from Cook's Illustrated!

The thing I love about Cook's Illustrated is that every recipe is tested fully in the test kitchen. You know how some cookbooks have some recipes that just don't work? Never the case with this magazine which spends test kitchen time comparing things like pie crust recipes so that they work out the best one and tell you why.

Considering so many cookbooks now offer something like 30 recipes, this is an encyclopedia compared to many being released today. This has TWO THOUSAND RECIPES! But what's better is that, even though you have both familiar and unfamiliar recipes in the book (Creamy Herbed Spinach dip but also a few other versions you likely hadn't thought of like Cilantro-Lime Spinach Dip with Chipotle Chile), you also have the tips on how to cook things that you might not have learned. Even though I went to culinary school, I still learn things from this magazine (the cookbook is compiled from their top magazine recipes) sometimes and most home cooks could soak up this stuff like a sponge because it's SO helpful: like how to pick out scallops at the store, or why you need to use the vodka in the tempura shrimp, or how to form a tart shell. These are all recipes where they compared lots of recipes and the test kitchen cooks chose the best--not just a bunch of recipes because they had flavors that were new. So, for example, while there are loads of recipes you'll come across and love that you may not have seen before like the caramelized onion dip rather than the usual "French Onion Dip", there are also the tried and true ones that they perfected, like deviled eggs. And they tell you why that recipe works the best.

Even though this book is so loaded with recipes that you aren't going to have pages and pages taken up by photos (because the pages here all contain recipes--a huge amount) there are illustrations, like using a plastic bag to pipe the filling into deviled eggs, and how to do it for those cooks who have not used that method.

The directions for each recipe are far more detailed than with most cookbooks. For example, rather than saying "Use a large pot" It will say "Use a pot that 9 quarts of liquid will fit in"...so for those who have no kitchen skills, you'll master everything like a pro without one ounce of confusion. For the pros, you'll likely pick up not only new recipes, but new skills as well. How can you not with this amount of info?

You also have several versions of dishes so you can make choices. So while you'll learn how to clean shrimp easily and perfectly for the shrimp tempura, for example, you'll also be able to choose from several dipping sauces or even make several different ones so that your guests have choices. Such as:

Teppanyaki Mustard Dipping Sauce
Ginger Soy Dipping Sauce
Chili Aioli Dipping Sauce
All of which can also be used with the Spanish Style Garlic Shrimp Recipe

Every kind of recipe is available no matter what your special dietary needs are or what the occasion for cooking may be, whether a family meal or lavish gourmet party, whether vegetarian or all meat, appetizers, even spiced nut recipes and loads of desserts.

At the start of each recipe it says "Why this Recipe Works" and you learn a lot from why that version is better than many recipes out there, and you know it will turn out right. For example, there are tons of pie crust recipes on the internet and in cookbooks--their test kitchen tries out the most popular and the experts tell you which recipe won and why.

So while there are already nearly 400 reviews on this cookbook, I loved it enough that I had to share some of the contents to help you see the range of recipes and why this may be one of those books you hand down to the next generation with notes and highlights in the borders--it just has so much inside:

Yes, this one is extensive...I had a bag gf potatoes and this gave me so many different ideas that they were gone quickly! Or what you want to run to the store to create, gourmet or simple.

I find myself reaching for this cookbook above all others lately because I know that no matter what I cook it will be tried and true and the flavors working beautifully together.

This has so many recipes that it's like owning a collection of cookbooks such as loads of dessert cookbooks, bread cookbooks, breakfast cookbooks, side dish cookbooks and every kind of main dish cookbook...appetizers, dips, soups, stews, stir fries and more...

2,000 of their best recipes...what else can be said? You'll surely find something you love!

This looks beautiful on your kitchen counter, either laying flat or like I have it, closed on my cookbook holder. Beautiful cover and ready to assist you when needed.

Great for bachelors overall

As a bachelor this is about the only cookbook I need. The recipes work. I don't have time or patience to deal with "good idea" recipes that fall flat. What hooked me on Cooks Illustrated is their yeast-raised waffles. Amazing.

The only knock I give it is that it still has that aspect of cookbooks where simplicity takes a detour. I don't have buttermilk powder. I'm sorry. I can't make those waffles.

The amount of content you get for the price is amazing. This book is loaded with recipes. It's nuts. What's also cool is that if you're searching for recipes and the internet points you to Cook's (and you're blocked by their paywall), chances are high that it's in this book. So it's like having an online membership with them.

Detailed Look at the Bible During the Middle Ages

Good reference books can be hard to find. I did not say that they are impossible to find. There are many out there. It is the good ones that are hard to find. This is especially true when you are talking about subjects that few are researching. The Bible in the Middles Ages is not one that is a common topic, but it is an important one nonetheless. The Practice of the Bible in the Middle Ages is one of those reference books that you must have in your Medieval library.

First off, this is not an easy read by the fireside book. This is an academic book. It is deep and rich with information that might not be easily absorbed by a casual reader. You must want to know what is said between the pages and you must be willing to absorb it all.

The Practice of the Bible in the Middles Agesis not a book written by one author. It is a collection of essays/works that cover the topic thoroughly. The chapters include "The Bible and Liturgy", "The Bible and Monasticism", "Biblical Exegesis Through the Twelfth Century", and "The Old French Bible". As you can see from these few chapter titles, this book is meant for the serious student of biblical history and history of the Middle Ages.

I found that I learned quite a bit in what I read. In all honesty, there were some things above my head but the context surrounding the sections helped me comprehend the piece. I discovered a better understanding of Catholic liturgy as well as how the Bible was maintained throughout the centuries. I have read many books that refer to the various liturgical times of the day but never fully understood them. This book gave me the education I needed for just that.

This is a beautiful book. Fantastic pictures and easy-to-read print containing a lot of fascinating facts on all three species. I am going to keep this copy for myself and buy another for my grandson. He lives in Alaska and really appreciates all of God's creatures. Besides, he will have a much better chance to see one in the wild than I will! My best opportunity here will involve a short drive to "Wolf Haven" for a tour of their facilities. After reading this book, I have a new respect for wolves, coyotes and foxes. I highly recommend this book to everyone that loves dogs! After all, modern, domesticated dogs began when our ancestors and wolves began to coexist with one another! My Alaskan Malamute is a very close relative of the wolf!

Captive, not wild, animals used in this book. Shameful.

I guess it is just the way things are these days, but it is disconcerting that all of the photos in this book are of captive animals, and not their wild relatives. This isn't the work of a wildlife photographer, but a master at staged images. It's too bad he doesn't disclose that information. I'd shop around, and reward real wildlife photographers who spend time in the wild, and who aren't supporting this dubious industry of keeping these species captive just so they can be trotted out for a photo shoot.

About the Author

Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Vincent N. Parrillo experienced multiculturalism early as the son of a second-generation Italian American father and Irish/German American mother. He grew up in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, developing friendships and teenage romances with second- and third-generation Dutch, German, Italian, and Polish Americans. As he grew older, he developed other friendships that frequently crossed racial and religious lines.

Professor Parrillo came to the field of sociology after first completing a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in English. After teaching high school English and then serving as a college administrator, he took his first sociology course when he began doctoral studies at Rutgers University. Leaving his administrative post but staying at William Paterson University, Prof. Parrillo has since taught sociology for more than 30 years. He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and has regularly conducted diversity leadership programs for the military and large corporations. His keynote address at a bilingual educators’ conference was published in Vital Speeches of the Day, which normally contains only speeches by national political leaders and heads of corporations and organizations.

Prof. Parrillo was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic and Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Pisa. He was the keynote speaker at international conferences in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden. He has met with government leaders, nongovernment agency leaders, law enforcement officials, and educators in more than a dozen countries as a consultant on immigration policy, hate crimes, and multicultural education. He has done on-air interviews with Radio Free Europe and Voice of America, appeared on national Canadian television, and been interviewed by numerous Canadian and European reporters.

Prof. Parrillo’s ventures into U.S. media include writing, narrating, and producing two PBS award-winning documentaries, Ellis Island: Gateway to America and Smokestacks and Steeples: A Portrait of Paterson. Contacted by reporters across the nation for his views on race and ethnic relations, he has been quoted in dozens of newspapers, including the Chicago Sun-Times, Cincinnati Inquirer, Houston Chronicle, Hartford Courant, Omaha World-Herald, Orlando Sentinel, and Virginian Pilot. He has appeared on numerous U.S. radio and television programs.

Prof. Parrillo is also the author of Strangers to These Shores, tenth edition, Contemporary Social Problems, sixth edition (Allyn & Bacon), Cities and Urban Life, fourth edition (with John Macionis), Diversity in America, second edition, and Rethinking Today’s Minorities. His articles and book reviews have appeared in journals such as The Social Science Journal, Sociological Forum, Social Forces, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Journal of American Ethnic History, and the Encyclopedia of American Immigration. He is General Editor of the Encyclopedia of Sociology for Sage Publications. Several of his books and articles have been translated into other languages, including Chinese, Czech, Danish, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Swedish.

An active participant in various capacities throughout the years in the American Sociological Association and Eastern Sociological Society, Prof. Parrillo has been listed in Who’s Who in International Education, Outstanding Educators of America, American Men and Women of Science, and Who’s Who in the East. In 2004, he received the Award for Excellence in Scholarship from William Paterson University. In March 2005, the Eastern Sociological Society named him its Robin M. Williams, Jr. Distinguished Lecturer for 2005–2006, and elected him as its vice president for 2008–2009.
