About the Author
Michael Swan is a writer specializing in English language teaching and reference materials. His interests include pedagogic grammar, mother-tongue influence in second language acquisition, and the relationship between applied linguistic theory and classroom language-teaching practice, and he has published a number of articles on these topics. Michael has had extensive experience with adult learners and has worked with teachers in many countries. He is a Visiting Professor at St Mary's College, University of Surrey.

Caution. This edition does NOT have an answer key

This is a good book for elementary students of English. Intermediate and advanced students of English, though, may not find this book very useful.
Beware! It does not come with an Answer key. So if you are studying English on your own, buy the edition that comes with an answer key ( The Good Grammar Book with answers [Paperback]).

Beautiful Workbook

I was very disappointed that this book became so much more difficult to buy after its apparent reprinting as the Oxford English Grammar Course: Basic. The exercises are very thorough and interesting. Students pretty well master concepts after completing practice. I have based many of my own exercises on the types of practice offered here. My students love the book, and many have asked to buy it. They may not recognize the merits of the exercises, but they like the drawings, I think. My favorite lesson in this book is the section on present perfect versus simple past. I've always struggled to understand the idea that the present perfect looks at the present and the past. The eye visual and exercises forcing students to decide whether a situation remains true based on the use of the present perfect or simple past provide an excellent example of processing instruction.
