Strategic design is a growing professional field. Strategic designers are more and more often called to use their principles, tools and methods to infl uence the innovation strategy of the companies they work with. This extended role requires designers to be able to balance human centeredness with technical feasibility and business viability in their projects. This book is super. When I started to read it I felt as though it was going to take what I was already trying to do as a teacher of 5th graders and make it better!
I love how Serafini puts teachers at the center and inspires you to trust what you know, to do your best practice, and get kids MORE involved in their assessments.
I already have student led conferences in the Fall and Spring, already used Portfolios, and already had kids doing weekly reflections, now all of those things will improve- plus I learned some other really helpful ways to "collect information" about the group of readers I have...It is summer, I've had the time to read and mull it over, and I'm hoping what I've learned in this text rolls into my practice without too much stress.

A surprsingly (?) good book!

When I received this book, at first glance, I was disappointed--the exercises seemed so...simple. But I gave it a try, and found that, a lot of those exercise were hard for me to play. So, with a little faith, I dived in deeper, and went through the whole book over the course of around a week. I have, so far, found it to be a very enlightening and practical guide, to help me find areas I am weak in, and to help me improve. It's not about "music"--it's just about technique. E.g., can you play a note on the g-string with your left middle-finger, plucking with your right index-finger, and then play a note on the d-string with your ring-finger and pluck with the left finger. Sounds easy, but, for me at least, it's not always the case.

I think this is a "two-hand" exercise book. The author doesn't go into hardly any detail about technique--he just lays out the exercises. I recommend doing all the exercises starting with the left then right plucking finger.

As a bass player for 35 years, my fingers have definitely become arthritic to some degree. The exercises help with that- especially if you play an extended range bass or upright where the stretches are particularly long.

This book is killer! The biggest hurdle to get over when first learning to play the bass or any stringed instrument is building the hand strength and muscle memory for the chord changes and scales. This book is the best way to build these muscles. It's a great book. Perfect for any player on any level. You really can feel and see immediate results. You won't be disappointed!

I still gave him this book to help in becoming a better and more educated person

My coworker told me about this book. You see, I have two brother in laws who curses all the time. I also have a brother who does also curses. I truly believe that people who feel a need to express themselves using curse words is uneducated and have no respect for he or herself or the person they are talking with. I gave this to one of my brother-in-laws for Father's Day. Although, I believe he finally realized how he sounds when using those words because he has made remarkable changes in his vocabulary, I still gave him this book to help in becoming a better and more educated person. Taming Your Tongue not only speaks about cursing, but also about complaining, gossiping, and other things we need to take note of when speaking. I bought four of these because I plan to give to my other brother-in-law for his birthday and my brother for his birthday. I also want to keep one for me. It never hurts to educate ourselves. You won't go wrong with purchasing this book and giving it to someone who feels a need to curse, complain, or talk about others.

I love this book, it is an easy read and was delivered promptly! This book gives practical explanations and examples of some very basic principles that we often times overlook. It displays many perspectives of what to say and what not to say.......all food for thought. I found that it has helped me to become a better listener. This not only helps others to open up more - but makes them feel better knowing that they have been heard. It encourages you to become less selfish and more open to the thoughts and ideas of others. This ultimately leads to having more consideration and patience - encouraging better relationships and people skills. Understanding others is key to building trust and genuine friendship(s). This book is good as a daily devotion and/or affirmations. It also helps with the development of self discipline as it relates to words - which are so easy to dish out, but almost impossible to take back! There is truly power and an art to "Taming your Tongue!"

So far good but....

So far this book is good but I did have an issue with the whole 'complimenting people being deceitful'. I just don't agree with that. Yes there are people who compliment others because they want something and that is wrong, however, the bible does say we are to lift each other up. Not all complimenting is bad. I compliment my son for doing a good job with his alphabaet. If my friend is dressed nice for her interview I will compliment her. I don't think all complimenting is bad. Maybe the author was a bit vague in this area.

Other than that the book is a good read so far.

Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement winner Bryan here presents the uncanny fruit of over 50 years of artistry and beachcombing. A child of the Depression, Bryan early on developed a penchant for collecting cast-off items from New York City sidewalks. As an adult, when walking the shores of Maine’s Little Cranberry Island, he does the same, now turning much of his seaside bounty into the more than 30 hand puppets captured here in exquisite detail by photographer Hannon. Not only do shells, sea glass and driftwood find new life in Bryan’s African folklore–inspired creations, but bits of net, marbles, thumbtacks, gloves, twine, all kinds of bones, watchbands, forks, fur and a bedpost—not to mention the occasional button—and more amazingly transform into appendages and accessories. As if his wildly fashioned creatures don’t have enough character, Bryan gives each of his puppets a name and poem describing both what it’s made from and its vision. Bryan (Can't Scare Me!) shows off another side of his artistry in this enchanting photographic tour of more than 30 puppets he has fashioned out of the flotsam and jetsam he finds on the beach around his Maine island studio. Sticks and bleached bones are fashioned into heads and bodies, scraps of old clothing become long robes, and frayed rope and mops become hair. Gaunt, angular, and haunting, there's nothing toylike about Bryan's creations. They could be sorcerers or shamans—or they might be found leaning against the bar of the cantina in Star Wars. Hannon photographs each puppet on its own spread, each bearing its own (often African) name, epithet ("Lubangi, Born in Water"; "Chipu, Gift"), and poem. Several spreads show groups of puppets lined up, suggesting that Bryan thinks of them as a group, a clan, united by a shared vision. Babatu has a head of smooth carved wood and a jaunty mustache of wiry straw. "I'm peacemaker," he explains, "Trained, wise counselor./ Should any conflicts start,/ I listen to their stories/ Till we're one in mind and heart." The Spirit Guardian's head of white bone suggests a horse; he's draped in a ceremonial robe of white. Award-winning author and illustrator Bryan has combined his love of art and poetry in this captivating and beautifully designed book. True to the subtitle, Bryan explores puppets made from found objects, including the beach glass, old bottles, weathered wood, and pieces of fishing net, that he has collected on the beaches near his home on Little Cranberry Island, ME. Where others see debris, Bryan sees a treasure of stories. Using paint, glue, and string, he crafts the characters of folklore and weaves his poetry around them. Threads of African folktales are infused with the spirit of these puppets. In two-page spreads, photographer Hannon provides both full-page and close-ups of each of the more than 30 puppets created by Bryan. The puppets are about two feet tall, and they are dressed in the colors and shapes of the natural “found treasures.” Bryan deftly uses these objects to create characters that speak in well-crafted, first-person narrative poems. String becomes the spider web woven by Anansi the trickster; wishbones become the moustache of Natambu, Man of Destiny; and sea glass, shells, and starfish embellish Lubangi, Born of Water. Traditional African themes abound as the characters introduce themselves through their poems, and readers are invited into the world of puppets and poetry. About the Author
Ashley Bryan grew up to the sound of his mother singing from morning to night, and he has shared the joy of song with children ever since. A beloved illustrator, he has been the recipient of the Coretta Scott King—Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award; he has also been a May Hill Arbuthnot lecturer, a Coretta Scott King Award winner, and the recipient of countless other awards and recognitions. His books include Sail Away; Beautiful Blackbird; Beat the Story-Drum, Pum Pum; Let It Shine; Ashley Bryan’s Book of Puppets; and What a Wonderful World. He lives in Islesford, one of the Cranberry Isles off the coast of Maine.

This book focuses on 36 puppets created by Ashley Bryan over a period of five plus decades. Unlike the earlier books which he authored or illustrated this book provides the reader with an insight to his creativity in using society's "cast away stuff" to create a royalty of African folklore.

The photography is crisp and brilliant giving to each their unique display. The photo of Ashley in his studio provides of the numerous mediums with which he expressed himself. While displaying his "sea glass" stained glass panels it lacked his vibrant and creative use of paints.

In addition to giving each of the puppets a name from countries or regions in Africa he has written his own verse for each of 33 of the 36 puppets. His gifts as an engaging story teller extend themselves as he invites the reader to write their "verse" for the three puppets who were included in the book without poems: Moriba, Barnabe, and Chioneso.

To me this book summarizes the rich diversity of gifts which this man whom I have known for more than seventy years as a teacher, friend and mentor. Thanks be to God for Ashley's life and the horizons he creatively broadened through art and word. The mystery is in the story.

The photographs show exquisite detail and the accompanying poems explain some of the materials and effects that were used in the making of the pupppets.This book is inspiring as well as an intriguing eye opening example of what can be created from found objects, I believe adults will be motivated and hopefully help children discover the world around them and how they can develop useful things out of the discards. A grand and handsome book and a great gift.

Elegant, whimsical, and slightly creepy puppets made by loving hand.

A noted African-American children's author now in his nineties, Ashley Bryan proudly shows off his great collection of colorful puppets that he himself had made over the years.

As one by one are introduced and described with an artful poem on each double-page spread, the beautiful puppets carry several inspiring messages to the future generations not only about African heritage but also about the preservation of the whole world.

To create these clever African-style puppets, Ashley Bryan collects debris washed up on Maine beaches and carefully arranges the pieces to physically resemble the figures of folktales from Africa. This is indeed a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle! :)

I dearly love the mystical African look on many of the puppets, though a few look quite spooky, especially with heads all made out of what look like animal bones. And Ashley Bryan also used furry pelts from unfortunate critters as well as glittering embroidery, colored glass, and pearlescent seashells to accent his treasured creations.

About the Author

Gillian Gloyer first attempted – wholly unsuccessfully – to visit Albania in 1981. She finally made it in 1998 and spent most of the next four years living and working there. She travelled the length and breadth of the country for both business and pleasure; she continues to visit the country regularly and retains good contacts there. She speaks the language well and translated the extracts from Albanian authors which feature in the guidebook. She is a keen hill walker and amateur archaeologist.

Great guide book

It was one of the few guide books in Albania. I just returned from this fascinating and beautiful country. The book was very helpful about important cities and things to see. One of the things in the book most helpful to me is it gave me a list of many tour companies that could put a took together private tours. I got quotes from several company and used one of the companies listed in the book Elite Travel. They did an outstanding job. That so much for taking the guess work out of traveling!

Best Albanian Tour Guide Book

Great book. I had the 3rd edition when I went 8 years ago. After reading felt well equipped. Many young natives commented that I know more about Albania and the places to see, and rivers, and history than they did. Looking forward to seeing and doing more, this time with a group of friends and family. I am sure I will feel well equpped with this updated book. I know it has more maps and details than the previous edition.

Precise to the point study guide for the exam

I bought the book as a study guide for the VCA-DCV exam and it helped me pass it on my first attempt. It is broken down into six chapters that cover all the needed information to pass the exam. It also provides access to an online study tool that contains hundreds of questions which are like the ones you should expect on the real exam.
Four stars because I think for such a small book it is too expensive.

VCA-DCV being retired November 30, 2015

Keep in mind that the VCA-DCV is being retired November 30, 2015 and being replaced with the VCA6-DCV. I think this book is based on vSphere 5.5, so it's not going to have the latest/greatest topics for the new cert. However, you will still get a good basis of what vSphere is - you will just have to follow it up with v6 specific items.

Concise and to the point

This book has excellent exam coverage. The author did a great job explaining the different data center challenges and the solutions provided by VMware. This book define/explains a lot of VMware vocabulary and the underlying virtualization theory. The content does a good job laying the ground work for the VCP-DCV certification.
