Poppy and Jazz have been best friends from the first week of uni. Whenever these two get together trouble isn’t far away and things haven’t changed much. When Jazz gets herself into financial trouble Poppy, being a good friend, offers to help. Quickly, with the help of Jazz, her life is thrown upside down. Madness ensues and her need to please everyone gets her in more trouble than she could ever imagine.
Before she knows it she’s got a fake boyfriend and is hiding so many secrets she’s scared they’ll spill out any minute. With a bullying boss, a sex crazed colleague, a mental mother and three brothers each with their own dramas, life has gotten pretty difficult for Poppy. And all of this would be much easier, if she could just stop falling over.
Will she get her life back to normal before her brother’s upcoming wedding? And will she want to?

No. Just no.

The idea behind this book is fabulous, I have to say. It's very Bridget Jones in that way, and I could tell that the author was trying really hard to achieve a "romantic comedy" type of storyline. Honestly, there were a few places where I found myself laughing, or even caught myself smiling, and the last two chapters completely saved this book from a very low one star rating. Okay, so I liked the premise, and I loved the ending, but why am I still rating it so low?
First of all, this book is riddled with errors that could easily have been caught in another read-through, and the author really skimped on comma use, which at best was annoying and at worst, was confusing. I was also thrown off by the frequency with which the female characters called each other "bitch" and "bitches" just for fun. Personally, if one of my friends spoke to me like that, I'm not sure we'd be friends much longer, and this also took away from the context when a character really was called a bitch in an angry manner. But that I could maybe have lived with, rationalizing that some groups of women really do speak to each other like that, and reminding myself as a writer that I have found errors in my own work on occasion.
But then it gets worse. I'm not sure there were any places in this book where a character simply "said" something. Instead, most dialogue is actually assumed to be very emphatic and with high volume, as the author has frequently written that the dialogue was "shouted." Combine the frequent shouting with the bitch-calling, and I'm not really sure why any of these characters were thrown together; they are all argumentative and very combative/reactional, and it seems very rare for any of them to authentically like each other. I found it unpleasant and unrealistic in the extreme, and there were several places where I almost decided to simply not finish the book.
It was a train wreck ... I didn't like most of it, but I just couldn't look away. There was WAY too much unbelievable drama, and the "heroine" is a ridiculous klutz (with probably a severe anxiety disorder), who alternates between over-reacting to the smallest things and whining about EVERYTHING throughout the course of the book. When she's not over-reacting or whining, she's thinking mean thoughts in her head about everything and everyone around her, and I found her very annoying. But getting back to the melodrama, let me just put it this way - during the course of the book, poor "heroine" Poppy endured all of this, and these are only the things I can still remember:
* leftover heartache from a bad breakup
* numerous encounters with the ex from said breakup
* nearly choking to death on bread in a restaurant, where NO ONE even thought to attempt the Heimlich Maneuver
* an arrest due to some drunken misconduct
* stealing from a mail truck
* a mugging
* a head injury, during which her forehead is embedded with shattered glass
* a broken/lost friendship due to above mentioned scheming
* a fall, during which her ankle is possibly broken but never checked out officially
* she glues a broken vase to her hands while scheming to spoil a real estate purchase
* a party gone bad lands her in the hands of a coke-snorting would-be rapist
* a friend rescues her from would-be rapist, only be shot immediately afterward in a gas station robbery
And all of this is interspersed with numerous physical fighting encounters, including a very angry, possibly homeless man in a bakery, and a generous splash of paint thrown by an animal-rights activist.
Not to mention, our "heroine" and her love interest? They pretty much do nothing but hate on each other through the entire book, only getting along for short periods of time during which the reader is supposed to believe that some great love has developed. Um, no.
I hate to be so harsh, but this book simply didn't click for me.

Wonderful Book, fun read

I won this book on a giveaway. I am so glad that I did! It is my first British read. I have never laughed so much reading a book. I fell in love with Poppy! I really am hoping that the author writes a sequel to this one!

The Debt & the Doormat by Laura Barnard

When Poppy and best friend Jazz decide to swap lives. What follows is an epic story filled with a dizzy calamity of mishaps.
What was such a shame about this book is that in my copy it had sentences missing from the story, so it jumps a lot and you have to work out what is happening. The book is not badly written it is written in an entertaining and lively way, and I did read the book the whole way through. I just found the leading character not that likeable, she is very shallow and there are too much stereotyping of people which some readers may not like. The leading character does not hold back and at some times is quite crude. But at the end of the day she is just a character, and there are people like this in the world, so why shouldn’t an author use this type of person as a character in the book? So that is what I was thinking when I was reading the story, but for me personally I like to connect with the characters and like the leading one, which sadly just did not happen for me with this book.
