The aim of this book is to cover a broad range of issues relating to the pedagogy of formal methods. The two editors, both well known in this area, aim to show how this very important subject area can be successfully taught to software and hardware engineers, even those without a strong mathematical background, by proposing various techniques that can help to surmount the technology transfer hurdle.

About the Author
Neville Dean earned his M.A. in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics from St. John's College, Cambridge, where he was elected scholar and awarded the Hollinshead-Howles prize and the Phineas Quass prize. He earned a D.Phil. in Experimental Physics from the University of Sussex, and also holds a teaching certificate for higher education. He is Associate Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, a Member of the Institute of Physics, a Chartered Physicist, and a member of St. John's College at the University of Cambridge. Dean is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the BCS special interest group in Formal Aspects of Computing, and the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. He is a representative on the Mathematics Working Group of the Societe European pour la Formation des Ingenieurs. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Anglia Polytechnic University.

Mike Hinchey graduated from the University of Limerick, Ireland summa cum laude with a B.Sc. in Computer Science, and was awarded the Chairman's prize. He earned an M.Sc. in Computation with the Programming Research Group at Oxford University, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science at University of Cambridge, where he has been ICL Research Scholar in Automatic Computing since 1992. He is also a professor in the Real-Time Computing Laboratory in the Department of Computer and Information Science at New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics, and a member of the ACM, IEEE,American Mathematical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, and also of St. John's College (University of Cambridge) and Wolfson College (University of Oxford).

A good comprehensive study of new design

Whether you're concerned with traditional formal issues or more interested in making whacked out typographic designs, this book covers all the bases and touches upon nearly every relevant designer in the past 20 years or so. It's smartly split into three sections, the first focusing on the real movers and shakers in forward-thinking design (Rudy Vanderlans, Paula Scher, etc.), the second on those who are now enjoying success with the progress they've made (Designers Republic, Carlos Segura, etc.) and the "progeny" as they refer to them, the next wave of creative and innovative designers. Not only does the book have a healthy amount of full color illustrations to provide ample evidence of the designers' talents, but there is enough copy to be able to really consider this reading material (think of it as almost extensive captioning). It's nice to see a book that heralds both the well known names of the industry as well as up and coming talent, and that David Carson isn't necessarily the end all of high design in contemporary culture.

Ten Years Ago this was Radical

The problem with this book is that it's a mile wide and one inch deep. Each artist only gets a page or two, and the images are small - so you only get a brief taste. After a while all of the "radical" graphics look alike - and not much floats to the surface. You won't find yourself going back to this book for ispiration after you have opened it a few times.
There are some good designers represented here, but they get lost in coverage that reminds me of a bad yearbook. Most of the work looks pretty, but very little of it is realy smart. Some of the work shown was really cutting edge stuff back in 1985, but today it looks a little dated. If this book reprented itself as a study of alternative design from '85 to '95 that might be one thing - but it doesn't have enough perspective or go deep enough.

Do not buy this book. There are errors in the format and content of the answer key, some explanations of the answers are inadequate ("Choice B works"), and ambiguous questions.I tutor for the SAT, and had previously recommended Barron's to my students. It appears that Barron's rushed the book to press. Wait for revisions or choose another publisher.

I have tutored Mathematics and SAT Prep (for math only) for years. I found the book an excellent choice for the high acheiver (650+) still wanting to improve their mathematics score. I found no errors in the math sections, and I continue to recommend it to a small set of my SAT prep students.

Delightful, inspiring approach to helping yourself to health

"Being an American on an American diet IS a preexisting condition."

If you don't understand this statement from Forbidden Healing, in the context of "Current farming practices and industrial style food packaging have robbed our foods of the nutrients we need for health, and thus are the main cause of disease in America." then, if you care about longevity as well as not being sick, you need to read this book. If you do understand it, but want a new perspective on how to power yourself to vibrant health, you might check out its introduction of the concept of "oxidative stress", and how one may avoid this stress via diet, supplements and attitude.

But its not just a very informative book about health and how to restore it to yourself and your family. Many of the "health" books of this type end up being dry, or have too much of a "formula" to follow so that they guarantee you will lose because you will lose interest.

If you don't just want "take your medicine" or "take your vitamins", but actually want something more like "nutrition, dancing on your counter", or "entertainment while you learn about health", then Forbidden Healing might be your means to an education on health - both physical and mental, and how to bring it to yourself, with simple choices every day of your life.

Further, the book instills a philosophy and zeal in the reader, rubbed off from the author's vibrant good will and enthusiasm, so that you will, after reading just a few chapters, feel definitely that you CAN change your life and be much more of a positive influence on the world as a result of reading Forbidden Healing. I recommend this book. You will finish it inspired and enthused!

READ THIS BOOK IF YOU'RE SICK & TIRED OF BEING SICK

This book is great and it's as simple as he says---oxygen/antioxidant balance.I'm an acute dialysis RN,and I understand the acid/base balance,ph,etc..involved in our "inner ocean" as he refers to it.Which is a perfect description.But this book opened my eyes even more.He explains it very simply.And he's funny!It will open your eyes,too.We all must think for ourselves,instead of blindly following the "plan of care"that our md's MUST follow--{and he speaks of this}or they will not be reimbursed for services rendered.Or possibly risk their license they worked so hard for.And that plan of care is all centered around pharmaceuticals--throw another pill @ it.I see alot.Enough over the years in my career,to know I want something different for my family and anyone I care about.I'm learning alot from this book,as I'm still in process of reading.The vita c megadosing makes such much sense.It's simple and omg--cheap!{for now anyway..} There's other ways of caring for ourselves.And HEALING ourselves!But it's up to us to search it out,do alot of reading & make some changes.Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge Capt Randall!

Just for now, put aside what you thought you knew about health and healing. Forget for the time being the "truth" you've been taught about drugs, vitamins, genes, germs, the sun, the soil; in your forgetting, include all your previous certainties about diet, stress and attitude. Capt. Randall is about to take you on a long, strange, counterintuitive voyage through your "inner ocean," a voyage of discovery. Your final destination: a pirate's buried treasure, the tools of health that have been deliberately withheld for generations...forbidden healing.

The journey is comprehensive, winding and unwinding, unwrapping and re-wrapping the atoms, electrons, molecules, the sounds and frequencies that constitute the material world of which we are so intimate a part, that "most amazing alchemy." In science-based principles that are nonetheless easily understandable, the author blows away the fog of corporate-based propaganda about symptoms, causes, treatments. His own journey to healing, based on experience and validated by chemistry, is peppered with humor and spiced with whimsy. It's not an effortless read, it will require your participation, but Capt. Randall is a gentle teacher whose insights will remain long after the book is closed. There is a contagion in his positive attitude.

Forbidden Healing is in no way a cookbook of medical formulas nor it is a collection of advice nuggets. It is unlike any "health" book you have ever read. Capt. Randall is a true iconoclast, a smasher of outdated images anchored by time. You will end your journey with a revised, clarified vision of what it means to be wholly healthy in a polluted world. The appendices are invaluable additions that you will want to pursue. This is a book you'll return to again and again. It may well change your life.

Osito Paddington en espa�ol

This is an excellent book and Paddington is a lovable bear. This particular translation into Spanish is slightly questionable at times - where on occasion it feels as though the interpretation was very literal - but it's not so jarring as to take away from the overall charm of the book. It gets the message across to Spanish-speaking readers well enough, with a few pauses along the way to figure out what a certain expression or word means in Spain that is not used in Latin America. I will continue to search for other translations, but overall, this is a nice interpretation that tells the story. I would recommend it to be read to children of 6 years and up.

Lovely...inside and out.

We love this book and Paddington's occurrences that we just had to have it in our collection. Both my boys (4 & 10) ask me to read it to them all the time. The translation uses a Spanish used in Spain... Being from Latin America, we quickly noted the difference but, it is Spanish nevertheless. We love it and wished there were more of Paddington's books in Spanish.

Excellent Method

I have long used the Suzuki products in teaching and needed a new book as mine had become quite "used". The ordering through the secondary vendor through Amazon was very smooth and painless.

Recommended by our private music tutor; my 12-year-old says it has helped him and has info he hasn't learned in school orchestra

This past school year was my son's first year in middle school orchestra. He selected the viola, and borrowed an instrument from the school. In order to continue to borrow the instrument over the summer, we needed to enroll my son in lessons this summer. My son is actually the one who asked to take lessons this summer; we were happy he was the one who asked to take lessons.
Our son's orchestra teacher does a great job. I had no idea that a bunch of beginners would sound as good as they did by the end of the school year. However, the orchestra teacher cannot possibly walk around to each individual student to correct posture or the way they're holding the instrument, or even where their fingers are. The orchestra teacher directed us to a solid tutor for the summer, and he suggested that we get this book. We got it, and my son was immediately able to play several of the songs.
The songs at the end of the book? Well, we did not get to those over the summer. What we did get from the private lessons was a better idea on how to improve posture, how to how the instrument, how to angle the bow. . . all of the things that helped.
BIGGEST TIP I CAN OFFER: If you are ordering this for someone who is just beginning, or who knows how to read music, ask that person to try to hum/sing what each song would sound like by reading the music. I did that with my son. It's been years since I laid my fingers on a piano, and unfortunately, I have forgotten how to read music. However, we discovered that it was a TREMENDOUS help to ask him to hum/sing (la la la) the songs before playing them.
My son was 11/turned 12 while using this book, so please keep in mind that this input is from the standpoint of a parent trying to assist a middle schooler who has shown an interest in the viola. Our private music instructor happens to have a PhD in composition (!) and plays with the philharmonic here, in addition to teaching at a private school. This is the series he uses for his students, and it's what he recommends to everyone who comes to him for private lessons.
My son said that he liked some of the tips in this book; it has information that he hasn't learned in orchestra at school.
I would recommend this for beginners.
