About the Author
Howard Hyde grew up in the radical leftist environment of Berkeley, California during the 1960's and 70's. Today he is a passionate advocate for limited government, free markets, private property, the Constitution, a strong America, Capitalism and economic literacy, and is President of the Southern California Republican Women and Men, an independent club established 1935. He is also author of the books "Java Web Database Application Development" and "Pull the Plug on Obamacare". Howard edits the website www.CitizenEcon.com and is a contributing writer and speaker to AmericanThinker.com. FrontPageMag.com and several other venues, organizations, television and radio programs as diverse as the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) and the Larry Elder show.

Well thought out and honestly argued.

First off, I guess I'm what Mr. Hyde would refer to as a well-intentioned liberal on social issues but more libertarian fiscal ones. I don't agree with all of his premises or conclusions but I give the book five stars for presenting a well thought out view.
I respect the fact that he argues with more fact than rhetoric and that he diligently sites his sources. Yes, he leans very right but, he calls out conservatives on some issues as well. If more of our elected representatives on both sides would argue as honestly as Mr. Hyde, I think they would get a lot more work done.
All in all, he makes some thought provoking points and I've since read two other books based on the sources that he cited. I think that in itself makes it a worthwhile read.

Howard Hyde's escape from Berkeley was an ideological escape. He threw off the chains of dogmatic leftism that infects most of the inhabitants of Berkeley. He follows many others before him such as George Orwell, Whittaker Chambers and David Horowitz who underwent a right traveling ideological conversion. This book is fun to read and is especially suggested for those born in the 1990's and later. Hyde explains events that otherwise would be mysterious to young people educated in our left leaning schools. This book is fun to read, especially for those of us who spent time in Berkeley. - Norman Rogers Berkeley '65

Having grown up in Berkeley myself, Howard Hyde's memoir was particularly poignant for me. Both at home and at school I was taught that capitalism was nothing but "greed", that free speech was merely "oppression", that individualism was "racism", and that American militarism was the root of all the world's problems. It took me decades and considerable psychic trauma to finally free myself from this self-hating dogma, and the story of Hyde's journey perfectly captures the soul-searching involved. His book is brilliantly written, and the logic behind his arguments is inarguable. More importantly, it can be a guide out of the wilderness for those trapped in confusion. A precious few people raised by radicals will enter the larger world, and suddenly find themselves wondering: why are the business people I meet kind and compassionate? Why are the Christians and observant Jews I meet both charitable and tolerant? This is not the world as portrayed in public schools, and Hyde's fascinating story shows how he came to grips with this dissonance. His "Escape from Berkeley" cannot be recommended highly enough!
