“The world has turned into the proverbial elephant and we the blind men. The old and the young among us risk being controlled by, rather than in control of, events and technologies. Blown to Bits is a remarkable and essential Rosetta Stone for beginning to figure out how all of the pieces of the new world we have just begun to enter–law, technology, culture, information–are going to fit together. Will life explode with new possibilities, or contract under pressure of new horrors? The precipice is both exhilarating and frightening. Hal Abelson, Ken Ledeen, and Harry Lewis, together, have ably managed to describe the elephant. Readers of this compact book describing the beginning stages of a vast human adventure will be one jump ahead, for they will have a framework on which to hang new pieces that will continue to appear with remarkable speed. To say that this is a ‘must read’ sounds trite, but, this time, it’s absolutely true.”

–Harvey Silverglate, criminal defense and civil liberties lawyer and writer

Every day, billions of photographs, news stories, songs, X-rays, TV shows, phone calls, and emails are being scattered around the world as sequences of zeroes and ones: bits. We can’t escape this explosion of digital information and few of us want to–the benefits are too seductive. The technology has enabled unprecedented innovation, collaboration, entertainment, and democratic participation.

But the same engineering marvels are shattering centuries-old assumptions about privacy, identity, free expression, and personal control as more and more details of our lives are captured as digital data.

Can you control who sees all that personal information about you? Can email be truly confidential, when nothing seems to be private? Shouldn’t the Internet be censored the way radio and TV are? Is it really a federal crime to download music? When you use Google or Yahoo! to search for something, how do they decide which sites to show you? Do you still have free speech in the digital world? Do you have a voice in shaping government or corporate policies about any of this?

Blown to Bits offers provocative answers to these questions and tells intriguing real-life stories. This book is a wake-up call to the human consequences of the digital explosion.

Blown to Bits Preface

For thousands of years, people have been saying that the world is changing and will never again be the same. Yet the profound changes happening today are different, because they result from a specific technological development.

It is now possible, in principle, to remember everything that anyone says, writes, sings, draws, or photographs. Everything. If digitized, the world has enough disks and memory chips to save it all, for as long as civilization can keep producing computers and disk drives. Global computer networks can make it available to everywhere in the world, almost instantly. And computers are powerful enough to extract meaning from all that information, to find patterns and make connections in the blink of an eye.

In centuries gone by, others may have dreamed these things could happen, in utopian fantasies or in nightmares. But now they are happening. We are living in the middle of the changes, and we can see the changes happening.

But we don't know how things will turn out.

Right now, governments and the other institutions of human societies are deciding how to use the new possibilities. Each of us is participating as we make decisions for ourselves, for our families, and for people we work with. Everyone needs to know how their world and the world around them is changing as a result of this explosion of digital information. Everyone should know how the decisions will affect their lives, and the lives of their children and grandchildren and everyone who comes after.

That is why we wrote this book.

Each of us has been in the computing field for more than forty years. The book is the product of a lifetime of observing and participating in the changes it has brought. Each of us has been both a teacher and a learner in the field. This book emerged from a general education course we have taught at Harvard, but it is not a textbook. We wrote this book to share what wisdom we have with as many people as we can reach. We try to paint a big picture, with dozens of illuminating anecdotes as the brushstrokes. We aim to entertain you at the same time as we provoke your thinking.

You don't need a computer to read this book. But we would suggest that you use one, connected to the Internet, to explore any topic that strikes your curiosity or excites your interest. Don't be afraid to type some of the things we mention into your favorite search engine and see what comes up. We mention many web sites, and give their complete descriptors, such as bitsbook.com, which happens to be the site for this book itself. But most of the time, you should be able to find things more quickly by searching for them. There are many valuable public information sources and public interest groups where you can learn more, and can participate in the ongoing global conversation about the issues we discuss.

We offer some strong opinions in this book. If you would like to react to what we say, please visit the book's web site for an ongoing discussion.

Our picture of the changes brought by the digital explosion is drawn largely with reference to the United States and its laws and culture, but the issues we raise are critical for citizens of all free societies, and for all people who hope their societies will become freer.

a must read
By John Doench
This is one of those books that will change the way you look at the world, or at least, your computer (which, as you'll learn, might be a lot more of the world than you think!) In a very readable prose, the authors explain how the world is fundamentally different now that so much information -- so many bits -- is being generated, monitored, and stored about nearly everything we do. The book covers not just how the internet actually works but also weaves together many applicable examples from the worlds of commerce, entertainment, government, and law.

It is one of those books that will cause you to share what you just read with whomever happens to be in the room, as it is filled with many gee-whiz moments. A great read.

Fascinating
By Bdem
This book is perfect for people who want to understand more about information technology and don't want to read something long or technical to learn it. The authors do a superb job taking the reader through how major technologies function (computers, the internet, cell phones, etc.), how they are shaping our lives, and what impacts they have on our laws and society. Amazing stories are woven throughout it, making it readable and fun for techies and non-techies alike. At the end of the book, you'll have a new understanding of the things we take for granted - and what possibilities and threats they pose. You'll also be light years ahead of most other people - who themselves will need to come up to speed in the coming years. A great read!

An intriguing analysis of how our lives have changed in the digital age
By R. Lodato
Few people would deny that the world has changed significantly since the explosion of the Internet. Hal Abelson, Ken Ledeen, and Harry Lewis have written an intriguing analysis of many of the issues that have erupted due to the ubiquity of digital data, not only on the Internet but elsewhere. Blown to Bits: Your Life, Liberty, and Happiness After the Digital Explosion, published by Addison-Wesley, digs into many of the ramifications of making so much information available to the world at large. As I read through the book, I was alternately fascinated and horrified at what information is available, and how it is being used and abused.

While the subject matter is primarily about a technology that many people may still not comprehend, the book is written at a level permitting most people to understand how it affects them. There is sufficient tutorial information on how the Internet functions to allow all to follow the reasoning. For those more web-savvy, there are many references to web sites illustrating the authors' points. The reader is encouraged to check them out as you go. While there is a natural flow from one chapter to the next, each one is sufficiently encapsulated so that you can read chapters in any order you like.

Blown to Bits is a fascinating read which will get you thinking about how technology is changing our lives, for better and for worse. Each chapter will alternatively interest you and leave you appalled (and perhaps a little frightened). You will be given the insight to protect yourself a little better, and it provides background for intelligent discussions about the legalities that impact our use of technology.

Excellent textbook with one major flaw
By Eric
I just finished reading the first fifteen chapters in a Principles of Management class. This book is an easy read with tons of excellent, relevant and useful information. There is one major flaw to it, the "Glindex". This book has something called a glindex, which is a half assed glossary and index combined. It is completely useless. It made it extremely difficult to use as a reference for a term paper when trying to find information I remembered reading previously. You basically have to search page by page. It's a shame because the rest of the book is great.

This is a great book. The only issue I had with the book is the small text but that is due to the publisher not Amazon. The format of the book is easy to understand and I like the way the major word definitions are in the outside margin to make it easier to find. I'm very glad I purchased the book. I prefer to have a printed version of books to study from over the e-book offered by my school. Just my preference.

Abysmal and juvenile - waste of time and money.
By H. Durden
I literally have never seen a fashion book that bad. I like the style on Gossip Girl and I was really looking toward this book. I have pretty much everything else on subject - InStyle and Lucky books, Rachel Zoe, Victoria Beckham, books of Chanel, Carolina Herrera, The Pocket Stylist etc etc. Any one of them is vastly superior to this book. I am absolutely baffled that any agent would look at this book and think this will be a success.
If you have never read a single fashion magazine, then perhaps this book will be of interest. There are maximum 10 photos, rest are drawings. Text is so on the 5th grade level ie. 2 pages on there are 4 types of sweater: turtleneck, tunic, v-neck and crew neck. Stunning, isn't it? And comments that go along are: V-neck for victory! Sail your crewneck to the shore or smth stupid like that.
Not sure who is targeting either. On one section he shows how to cut up a t-shirt (which everyone has already done), then there's a picture of neon pink leggings next to a pencil skirt. I was bewildered. Any fashion book will have the content of this one but so much more. This guy is so lucky to have a job.

Don't Bother
By Amazon Customer
As a fashion blogger, I love to read style books. So I was quite excited for this book especially since it's written by Eric Daman. I figured the man who dresses the Gossip Girl cast so spectacularly would surely write a fantastic, well-informed book. However, I'm disappointed to say that this book was a complete waste of money.

The book features incredibly basic information that a majority of people are already well aware of. For instance, there are pages dedicated to the different styles of skirts, jeans, tops, and cardigans. There is even two pages dedicated to classifying different skirt lengths! Aren't we all already aware of what classifies a skirt as mini, knee-length, ankle length, etc.? There are even sections on types of bras and underwear. Seriously, how superfluous is that? (Come on, Daman! Is this the best you could do, really?)

At twenty-one years old I found this information to be completely useless. I didn't learn anything new from Daman. Perhaps the information within this book is better suited to a middle-schooler who knows nothing about clothing.

Bottom line: Don't waste your money. If you really still want to read it, go to a bookstore, take a seat, and read it. It will take all of fifteen minutes.

Bad
By shop girl
I'm so glad I didn't end up ordering this book, but looked through it (it took all of ten seconds) at the bookstore instead. I expected it to be full of pictures of cool clothes, fun gossip girl fashion and inspiration. This has none of that. The paper quality is even bad! There are barely any pictures, the fashion that IS there is awful and unwearable, and the "inspirations" are things we've already seen a million times (turtleneck, t-shirt, basic dress...)yawn. Maybe buy used, but even then, don't bother with this book unless you're in 6th grade.

Hypnosis unlocks so many secrets in your mind - it opens up new vistas and brings new and undiscovered pleasures.

But can you use hypnosis to trick your own mind? Can you use hypnosis to make yourself forget what just happened, what's going to happen, where you are, or even where you are?

Hypnotist LeeAllure and her subject, D.J. Pynchon embarked on a challenging series of experiments, using hypnosis to discover if hypnotic amnesia can be imbued in a skeptical mind. This book contains the transcripts from those experiments and presents the various methods, techniques, tips and tricks that you can use to explore and create hypnotic amnesia for yourself.

Whether you're just curious about recreational hypnosis or it's a long-standing interest of yours, you will find something compelling in their journey and in the wide array of approaches to the subject.

Your adventure begins in three, two, one...

Well worth the wait. Awesome. :D
By Amazon Customer
I have been eagerly awaiting this book. My introduction to hypnosis came when I witnessed an erotic hypnotist give his girlfriend an orgasm in the parking lot when we were standing around smoking, just by snapping his fingers, and then put her under a hypnotic drug trip and left my girlfriend and I to watch over her for the next few hours. It was an experience that stuck with me that made me want to learn more. But until I came across "the Books of Wiseguy" I didn't have much good information on real hypnosis. It seemed I was tragically doomed to wade through a sea of New Agey BS, sure that the right books were out there somewhere but coming across all the wrong ones instead. I had never previously had an interest in hypnosis in a specifically erotic context, but one day it occurred to me to see what I could find, and it lead me to the two outstanding books written by Mark Wiseman, aka Wiseguy, which I absolutely devoured. Much to my surprise, an event in my area called WEEHU was just around the corner, and I noted that DJ Pyncheon and LeeAllure (who Wiseguy praised in his books as highly skilled in the area of hypnotic amnesia - the very topic which I found to be most fascinating of all) were teaching a class. And the name of that class? Hypnotic Amnesia! Jackpot.

WEEHU turned out to be awesome, spectacular, and outstanding, something I WILL be doing again next time, but what convinced me to buy my ticket in the first place was the fact that LeeAllure and DJ Pyncheon were teaching a class in the very subject that most fascinated me. I enjoyed their class, but I was a bit disappointed in that it felt a little bit like a big plug for the book they were writing at the time - this book - offering plenty of "what you can do" but not enough "how to do it". A few months later and the book has finally arrived! I could not be more thrilled. All of the "how to" of hypnotic amnesia is explained quite clearly here (the book assumes you already know hypnosis 101 stuff). It offers 32 different methods for using hypnotic amnesia, and shows (via transcripts) how they actually played out between hypnotist (Lee) and subject (Pyncheon).

I am very, very, very pleased. The book is excellent and it was well worth waiting for. LeeAllure is worth her salt. Pyncheon is an excellent subject (and a lucky man). And green dolphins live to eat fish. Truly a book to remember on how to forget.

Something here for anyone interested in recreational hypnosis
By Chew Toy
A charmingly in-depth look at a year-long experiment in improving one hypnotic subject's ability to forget things on command, by exhaustively trying every different method the authors could think of and taking notes on the results. I'm finding this book useful both for the variety of techniques documented, and for the look at exactly how they played out in practice, successes and failures and notes for future sessions. I highly recommend it.

Ironically memorable read exploring Hypnotic Amnesia
By Rising fan
This book was quite an immersive delving into the titled phenomena. Lee Allure and DJ Pynchon explore a lot more experiments than I thought there would be for testing Hypnotic Amnesia. Though #14 was probably my favorite of all, all of them were fascinating to a greater or lesser degree. Figuring out the format was a little confusing at first, but once I did, I was glad to see how the hypnotist and subject both candidly transcribed their accounts with dialog, notes, what did and didn't work between them, and the course of her inductions. I was aware of Lee Allure as a hypnotist, and her style seems as engaging in writing as it is audibly. It was easy to imagine myself present during each trial, or even as Lee's subject, knowing what might and might not work for me, happy to have a part in it.

A very enjoyable book by two trance enthusiasts who obviously have an adventurous passion for hypnosis, and satisfied a bit of my curiosity for how far someone can go into hypnotic amnesia.

Visual Intelligence: Perception, Image, and Manipulation in Visual Communication, by Anne Marie Seward Barry

Today, our environment is dominated by the visual. This book explores "visual intelligence" as a basic and indispensable tool of cultural survival. The author offers a practical manual on a non-superficial level for those who seriously want to know how images are processed, how they function in relation to our innermost beings, and how they form the psychological fabric of our political, social, and economic environment. Barry defines how we derive meaning from images and examines perceptual process, how it has evolved, and the role it plays in our thinking. She critically examines the concept of rationality and explores how visual logic works to create meaning. The book goes behind the obvious and beyond the superficial as it critically examines the visual power and logic of images, cutting across a variety of areas: perceptual psychology, art, television, film, literature, advertising, and politics. The second section of Visual Intelligence examines the role which various media play in creating the images which impact our lives: how visual images create a language with profound psychological meaning, and how print, television, and film media manipulate images to create desired emotional effects. Close-ups explore visual subtleties in such areas as digital manipulation, camera attitudes, and contextual framing, as well as the social consequences of "image" as an abstract concept expressed in concrete visual terms. Part III looks critically at the most controversial areas of image persuasiveness today-advertising, politics, and entertainment.

Review
We have always been interested in what images mean, but in the current era of expanding visual technologies, the question is critical. Visual intelligence is recognized as an aspect of intelligence that is crucial to understanding our world. The role of visual intelligence must be considered in the educational process. The increasing role of visual images in our society necessitates increasing skills in the reading and understanding of those images. This book hits on a central quandary of contemporary society, the power of visual media and the use and control of that power. Mary Stieglitz, Boise State University"

Amazon.com Review
A wrestler gets an erection and the crowd turns viciously against him. A young, beautiful prostitute thinks better of her latest client, a baseball player who has already killed 11 spectators with his foul shots, than she does of married men "playing the dark game that some men did, putting themselves closer and closer to the edge of their lives, until something went over." A warrior justifies a major tactical mistake (not leaving enough time for the cauldron of oil to heat) in a gung-ho bureaucratic report: "The problems of the day were not attributable to inappropriate deportment. My staff was good. It was when the Visigoths had approached close enough that we could see their cruel eyes and we could read the savage and misspelled tattoos that I realized our error."

Hotel Eden offers two hilarious stories, the boiling oil project and a complex variation on a suburban myth. A young couple necking in an isolated spot hears scratching on one side of the car, speeds off, and discovers the local psychopath's prosthetic hook on the door handle. In Ron Carlson's telling, the item belongs to an innocent mental-asylum watchman. And Mr. Howard Lugdrum is more than a little upset that everyone's sympathy is going to the kids! "I was lucky I was wearing my simple hook and the straps broke; if I'd been wearing my regular armature, those two little criminals would have dragged me to death." This is a seriously funny collection, but it is also serious. In several pieces, notably the title story, "Oxygen," and "Nightcap," the characters are led astray and into disappointment or unwanted knowledge. The college student delivering medical oxygen one summer vacation realizes, "I was young those nights, but I was getting over it." Carlson is also a poet of precarious lives, humiliation, and loss.

From Library Journal
In News of the World (Norton, 1987), Carlson wryly observed the public's fascination with the weirdness of tabloid journalism by giving us a straightforward accounts of Bigfoot, our most popular urban legend. The strongest stories in his uneven new collection have this same sort of quirky sensibility. In "The Chromium Hook," we find out the real story behind that deranged mental hospital escapee who has terrorized generations of teenage couples, and "What We Wanted to Do" is a hilarious account of medieval warfare gone haywire, told in a way that could pass as a modern-day, excuse-ridden statement to the press. "The Hotel Eden" and "Oxygen" are truly engrossing and pack an emotional wallop, but most of the other stories here have a somewhat generic feel and fail to transcend the conventional, man-has-difficulty-relating-to-women plotline. From Kirkus Reviews
A distractingly uneven compendium of 12 stories from the generally unpredictable author of two previous collections (The News of the World, 1987; Plan B for the Middle Class, 1992). Carlson's tales are narrated in a flat emotionless voice that's often deliberately at variance with their unusual, not to say outrageous, premises. For example, there's the major-league ballplayer whose line drives have accidentally killed 11 people, and whose personality is drastically altered by his frustrating celebrity status (``Zanduce at Second''). Or the convict whose incarceration stimulates his inventive skills (``A Note on the Type''), or the military leader who debates to himself the pros and cons of dumping boiling oil on invading Visigoths (``What We Wanted to Do''). Several pieces, including ``The House Goes Up,'' simply fail to develop their conceits in fruitful ways. And many are dominated by attention-getting specifics that are at best incidental to the story's main thrust--like the glorious funny- sleazy description of a wrestling show (``Mack's Mat Matches'') in ``Dr. Smile,'' or the amusing account of a seduction in ``Nightcap,'' which doesn't fit very well with the maudlin, underdeveloped story of unrequited love that contains it. Conversely, Carlson reinvents with deadpan panache the hoary old horror chestnut about the escaped maniac who barely misses slaughtering teenaged lovers parking (``The Chromium Hook''). ``Oxygen'' plumbs level after level of emotion and understanding in the richly imagined tale of a college kid whose summer job delivering oxygen to medical patients teaches him more than he wants to know about sex, death, and the baffling permutations of simple human need. And ``The Prisoner of Bluestone'' portrays with deeply moving simplicity the confusion and passion of an autoworker desperate for communication with the wife and daughter who he feels have moved beyond him. An overall disappointment, but those last two terrific stories make it clear that we'd better keep reading Carlson. (First serial to Esquire) -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Brilliant work of art
By Anita Gelbart
"The Chromium Hook" and "Oxygen" are well worth the cost of the book. "The Chromium Hook" was brilliantly contrived and the most entertaining story in the book. To be honest I was about to give up on the book because the first six stories didn't really impress me. Not that they were poorly written, but because I just couldn't relate to the characters. In "Hotel Eden" a man passively accepts being tricked into leaving his girlfriend alone for the weekend with a mutual friend. Most men that I know would not tolerate this. "Keith" was about shallow high school kids. Who cares? I'm glad those mediocre stories didn't keep me from reading "The Chromium Hook," because I would have really missed something.

"Oxygen" is a real work of art. It's a deeply moving story about a nineteen year old narrator who tells in the past tense his experiences on a route delivering oxygen tanks. There is an interesting realistic contrast in this story. Most of the people he delivers to are old and dying of respiratory diseases. One such customer is old and repulsive and lonely. He forces the narrator to stay with him and listen to his stories, and he makes him eat cookies and kool aid. The narrator can't stand to be with him. Another customer has a beautiful daughter who seduces the narrator, and they begin having a regular fling. It's a situation that happens often to young people. They'd rather spend time with good-looking peers than with aging grandparents. The theme fascinated me.

"A Note on Type," "Dr. Slime," and "Down the Green River" were also good.

I would like to note one thing. In my paperback edition page 42 is rerun instead of page 47. Also the ink is sometimes of an inconsistant clarity. A print on demand book that I authored (Talk Radio) has a much higher quality production. I would think Penguin could do better than this. Their production was a disservice to Ron Carlson. If a little press like PublishAmerica can put out a perfectly produced book, than Penguin should be able to as well.

Count Carlson among the top short story writers working toda
By Voice of Chunk
A story should either make you laugh or cry. Ron Carlson's stories do both. I don't know how else to describe his stories other than comparison -- he's as poignant as Andre Dubus, as funny as Lee K. Abbott and John Dufresne, as insightful as Charles Baxter and Lynne Barrett, and has an eye for detail like William Trevor or Alice Munro. Though he's not a minimalist, Carlson doesn't waste a word to sentimentality or a scene to gratuitous fluff. His stories are chiseled out of granite. A great collection.

A Collection of stories that will entertain and move you
By ChickLitGurrl
I found myself very entertained by Carlson's collection of stories, Hotel Eden. A lot of people insisted that I check out his work, and I'm so glad I did. What I found in Hotel Eden was a collection of stories with characters from every walk of life. They were so different, yet so real that I found it hard to believe they lived only on the page and in my mind.
Any reader of Hotel Eden will appreciate Carlson's tight and poetic writing that has the ability to snatch you into - at times - bizarre storylines, like the story Zanduce at Second, about a baseball player who has killed 11 spectators with his stinging foul shot and finds an almost blood thirsty thrill in regaining his former playing prowess.
In a collection, I would expect to find a few great stories, but in Hotel Eden, I found 12 wonderful stories filled with intriguing characters, fascinating plotlines and a mixture of humor and reality (a sometime sobering thing).
I would definitely recommend Hotel Eden to those interested in reading great literature that is ENTERTAINING.
