The Art of the Two-Handed Sword translates one of the last surviving works on the use of the two-handed sword, also called the great sword, a Renaissance descendant of the medieval knightly weapon that was equally at home on the battlefield, at tournaments, in the fencing academy, or on the street. The second half of the book provides a clear, practical, detailed guide to its use, as well as to the theory and practice of historical fencing. Francesco Alfieri’s 1653 Lo Spadone (The Two-Handed Sword), translated here, provides a “missing link” between medieval and modern martial arts. It displays clear continuity with both medieval swordsmanship and the still living traditions of sabre and great stick. Beginning in the 14th Century, swords became more sharply pointed in order to pierce the heavy plate armor of the day, and the grip became longer to allow two-handed use for greater power. By the end of the 15th Century, the two-hander, as long as a man is tall, had become a fearsome infantry weapon used to break up pike formations and in honor guards defending the standard or banner. It was also used in tournaments, on the field of honor, and for civilian self-defense. This long two-hander was known in Italy as the spadone. Its basic methods have continued to the present day in great stick technique. The Art of the Two-Handed Sword is the first complete English translation of Alfieri’s book, supplemented by related materials: the MS Riccardiano (c. 1550) and works by Camillo Agrippa (1553), Giacomo di Grassi (1570), and finally Guieseppe Colombani (1711), who provides our last textual reference to the weapon. Alfieri’s work is supplemented by Ken Mondschein’s painstaking reconstruction and adaptation of longsword practice for the present day. He draws on primary sources, martial arts traditions, classical and modern fencing theory, and extensive practical experience to create a practical and enjoyable method for learning and practicing the spadone under modern conditions. Numerous photographs illustrate the techniques that he describes.

About the Author
Ken Mondschein, a lifelong student of history and the martial arts, received his Ph.D. in medieval history from Fordham University. He is certified as a Pr�v�t d’Escrime by the International Academy of Arms and holds a second-degree black belt in traditional Japanese karate. He is a historical fencing instructor and Research Fellow at the Higgins Armory Museum, a Visiting Fellow at University of Massachusetts— Amherst Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies, and a fencing coach at Pioneer Valley Fencing Center. He was a Fulbright grantee to France in 2007–2008 and a visiting fellow at Harvard in 2009–2010. Ken is the translator of Camillo Agrippa’s seminal 1553 rapier treatise (Italica Press, 2009), and The Knightly Art of Battle, a study of Fiore dei Liberi’s medieval martial arts (Getty Publications, 2011), among other works. In all, Ken has almost two decades of martial arts experience, with fourteen years of experience in traditional Western swordsmanship and stick fighting. He is also an experienced equestrian.

Translation and Interpretation!

This book is great for anyone interest in historical swordsmanship. The author provides translations of three works on the two-handed sword or spadone. Alfiere, Di Grassi and Agrippa- all three of which are more famous for their single-sword work, but have something to say about the use of the two-handed sword as well!

Alas, the translations provide hints, but not a complete picture of the system involved. The artwork is sparse, the instructions simple and sometimes frustratingly lacking and even with three translated texts- there is a sense that something is missing.

Not a problem!

Ken Mondschien, PHD has taken the bold step of providing his interpretation of the system and included photos, instructions, reasoning and text-citations to support his conclusions. It's hard to take a large work and interpret it for a modern audience. It's truly yeoman's work to take sparse text and do the same thing.

For the price, the book is a steal. You get THREE translations with art, then a whole interpretation from the author with photos. For anyone interested in medieval longsword the book shows 'where things went', for those interested in Renaissance swordsmanship, the book is ready to go for drills, techniques and application. A fine addition to one's historical, or western martial arts bookshelf!

Awesome!!!

I have dedicated a life time studying mixed martial arts long before it was popularized by the U.F.C. ! I also started studying the lost arts of sword fighting as soon as the old fight manuals were made available to the public. Real sword fighting & Olympic fencing are roughly 500 years removed from one another. At first I was amazed to see many Asian moves, throws & joint locks coming out of European fight manuals but as a after thought it made perfect sense because the Human Body has the same limitations & capabilities no matter what continent your on!!! I would not recommend this particular book for beginners but for those that have been practicing from the old fight manuals & with a variety of weapons, this manual is a must have bridging the gaps between The Long Sword & The Great Sword!!! There are a lot of little gems to be found in this Fight manual & those who have already been studying will recognize the subtle differences & catch on quickly to the extreme & subtle differences necessary for properly using a Two Handed Sword. You will see the parallels to the use of Pole Arms. Where the moves involved in the much lighter long sword are very compact, quick & precise we see with the heavier longer Two Handed swords where centrifugal momentum comes into play making the huge figure eight with your blade more practical & much less Hollywood where you see this done unnecessarily with lighter blades. While I wouldn't recommend this book to beginners, those that are already familiar with the use of the Sword this is a must have book for your study material!! After some deeper thought I would like to say that this would be a good book for beginners especially if they pick up some other treatises. I would recommend "Sigmund Ringeck's Knightly Art of the Long Sword" as well as its companion book " Knightly Arts of Combat", both of these books have very easy to follow drawn instructions so detailed they show foot placement & divide the body so you can follow the correct hand grip's right & left hand placement on the sword. Their are other great reference books but with these three Books & a helpful study partner a beginner can get a great start.

A must-have for fencing enthusiasts.

Imagine "The Science of Fencing" by William Gaugler, but written for two-handed sword. The classical influence is clearly present in this book, which can be a danger, but the author channels it perfectly: using extensive outside knowledge to more deeply understand, but not second-guess, the source material (which is also included in the original for those who wish to experiment with other interpretations). The book flows naturally from principles, to solo drills, to partner drills of increasing sophistication, including step-by-step instructions and lots of photographs. Be warned, though, this may take a long time to read, not because it is exceptionally long or at all difficult to follow, but because with every page you will want to pick up a sword and go practice!

A Survival Guide for the Rest of Us

As an experienced prepper in my own right, it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to the plethora of survival guides currently on the market. It seems as though a new book appears daily and although many are excellent, an equal number represent a rehash of material that has been presented in hundreds of other books, websites, and government publications.

When I picked up the Ultimate Situational Survival Guide, I expected more of the same but was pleasantly and thoroughly surprised to find that Robert Richardson's book struck a different chord. Going beyond beans, bullets, and band-aids, this book gets into real life situational survival scenarios including urban crime and crimes against persons. With strategies to both avoid and defend yourself against bad guys, the book includes detailed instructions and steps you can take to keep yourself and your family safe, no matter what.

That is not to say that it doesn't cover natural and manmade disasters. It does that as well as offering tips for surviving cyber attacks, terrorist events, and even an economic collapse.

Note: This is not a wilderness survival guide. Rather, it is a guide for the everyday man or woman who has a family and a life to live. The book is written in an engaging manner that will make you think and will encourage you to examine the survival risks inherent with your own geographical location, financial condition, and lifestyle.

An Excellent Baseline Resource for Anyone Wanting Sound Direction and Practical Advice When Facing Real-life Survival Situations

Let me start by telling you what I think Robert Richardson’s first book, The Ultimate Situational Survival Guide, isn’t. It’s not the same old rehash of survival skills regurgitated between the covers of a newly minted title. It is a fresh look at real-world survival situations and how to best prepare for and protect against them. Richardson, a noted survival expert and founder of offgridsurvival.com, has written the common man’s basic primer to recognizing, prepping for, and surviving many of the dangers present in our society today.

Any book that has the word “ultimate” in its title immediately raises my suspicions and skepticism about its ability to deliver, this volume being no different. However, in this case, Richardson has authored a work worth reading. This volume is by no means the magnum opus of survival treatise. Nor do I think the author intended it to be. But, what this book is, is an excellent baseline resource for anyone wanting sound direction, practical advice and encouragement when facing real-life survival situations in our 21st century world. Very shallow and repetitive treatment of the subject. This book was a waste of my time and money.

More comprehensive and useful books include: Emergency - this Book will Save your Life by Neil Strauss, Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family by Arthur T Bradley, and Prepare for Anything Survival Manual by Tim MacWelch.

Senderos is used in my Advanced Spanish conversation class. The story is an excellent read for those wanting to improve all parts of their Spanish, (conversation, grammar, reading, writing). It is a realistic must read to understand the struggles of Mexican Immigrants coming to the US, looking for a better life, and willing to work hard, improve their skills, and contribute to improving our life. I would absolutely recommend as a must read for all US Spanish Classes.

Este libro es una bella experiencia. Se trata de un joven mexicano y las experiencias de su familia. Trabajan como burros para sobrevivir y realmente tanto trabajo casa acaba con el padre. Pero la familia sobrevive con mucho amor. Mucha gente vive en nuestra sociedad "rica" en este pobreza y casi nunca escuchamos de las experiencias de ellos. Fue un privilegio leer este libro y entender un poco mejor de la experiencia mexicana-americana. Seria una buena cosa si mas gringos leyera este libro para entender el gran valor de los inmigrantes a este pais.

Terrible, terrible

The textbook is fine but it was the service of getting the textbook that wasn't! I know it was an international order, but to take 1 month to get my book and they didn't even try to deliver it to my home, it went straight to the post office without me knowing. I mean I expected this book to arrive later than usual, but to arrive 1 month after I order it, and on top of it I had problems ordering it! It was really difficult to catch up in the class this book was for because of the late arrival.

Otherwise the book was brand-new and I can't really complain about the content of the book because I need it for school.

About the Author

Frederik Coene is currently Attach� dealing with post-conflict assistance in the Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia. His research on the Caucasus began in 1999 during his internship in the Office of the Secretary-General at NATO Headquarters. Since then he has researched, worked and travelled in all parts of the Caucasus.

Well researched but not as well written

Looking for an introductory text to the region in preparation for a trip to Georgia, I found a copy of F. Coene’s _The Caucasus_, which left me despairing I’d learn much. That’s not because Coene hasn’t done his research. The book is stuffed with data. Unfortunately, it reads more like an encyclopedia and is best used as a reference and research tool. Charles King’s _The Ghost of Freedom_, on the other hand, is quite the opposite, a well-written, compelling narrative that though limited historically to the last two hundred years, offers a portrait of a region where independence is always just out of reach. King is in fact such a solid writer I’m seeking out his histories of the Black Sea, Odessa, and the new Turkish Republic. In the meantime, I wonder if anyone has anything more to recommend on the Caucasus.

Coene's book is easily one of the best books I've come across regarding the Caucasus. As the previous reviewer cited the work covers both the north and south Caucasus with great information across a variety of issues...ranging from conflict, economics, demographics, historical and cultural topics. This is an indepensible read, although I found the price slightly high it was very worth the purchase.
