History and Fiction, All Rolled Up Into One Magnificent Story!

I became curious about reading this book after learning that the main character was somewhat designed after that of Temple Houston, Sam Houston's son. I had no expectations, and oh my - how delighted I was to discover this wonderful author! How can you go wrong with beautiful writing and an exciting story, set over a period of years where so many changes took place in this Oklahoma territory? It is a great story about a family of unforgettable characters, who move to a town in Oklahoma during the late 1800's. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in this time period, and those that just love a great story.

grain of salt

David G. Guzman is obviously not an involved member of the Artworld as is evident by the very misinformed statement that Warhol is the "only" recognizable name in the list of contributing and featured artists. I would deeply question if this reviewer has actually read or viewed this book based on this statement and would take his opinion with a grain of salt. What makes my opinion a little more informed is simply a great deal of education in the arts, multiple degrees in painting and photography, and a career as an artist with active relationships within the art world. However, my view is only one of many.

The Painting of Modern Life's list of artists includes very prominent and influential artists of our time. The list is varied enough that, as those with moderate knowledge of modern and contemporary artists will know, most people with an interest in how photography has influenced painting will be satisfied and engaged. None of my colleagues or peers would ever consider Gerhard Richter to be "lacking in national prominence" as his paintings easily sell for over a 1/2 a million at the least and upwards of 14 million for his finest.

I would consider this book to be a good resource for students and professionals alike. The only comment made in Guzman's review that has any sense of validation is that this book would serve as a "great introduction to artists painting modernity at its finest."

The "best" work from each artist is presented here. I think a lot of them have their best ahead of them. Regardless, if you are looking for a great introduction to artists painting modernity at its finest, then check this book out. There are a lot of amazing painings in here. Warhol is the only recognizable name, but where the other artists lack in national prominence they make up for in raw talent.

Written by Ed Hanks, it was a good document that helped get new players set up with what is a fairly complicated game. As any player who’s been playing since the beginning knows, Hearts of Iron 3 has been through some real changes over the years. Yet, while Semper Fi and For the Motherland expanded game mechanics substantially, the fundamentals of land combat remained relatively the same. With the release of Their Finest Hour, even basic assumptions about how to play the game have changed enough to justify another strategy guide. Combined with differences in unit statistics, modifications to aircraft stacking penalties, and a complete reworking of the combined arms mechanic, it seemed like it was about time to write a new one.

Make Vol. 37 - Homegrown Drones!

Make Volume 37 features homegrown drones as the focus topic for the issue. Drones for personal use can range from inexpensive hobby devices to sophisticated flying machines suitable for aerial photography. One's involvement with drones is only limited by your passion level and pocketbook. This issue features articles on construction, flying, and regulations of unmanned aerial vehicles. After reading this issue draw your own conclusions to the future of UAVs. Will drones one day replace the local delivery van? Time will tell.

Make is one of my favorite publications. The focus article provides in depth coverage of a specific topic while the additional articles add a variety of subject matter that keeps things fresh and interesting. As a woodworker I enjoyed the "Salt and Pepper Well" project that uses the drill press as a lathe for making a small part. The "License Plate Guitar" project is bound to be a favorite of the musically inclined maker.
The Skill Builder article, "Finding Your Way with GPS" had me looking for the GPS receiver I have stashed in my office. Happy to report it's been found and I look forward to using it soon.

My favorite mode of delivery for Make is the PDF version. This allows me to size the print comfortably and most importantly I can follow the included hyperlinks to additional information. In my opinion this is what makes the Internet useful and enjoyable. I would recommend Make to anyone that likes pick up a tool and tinker. Should you prefer print or digital delivery, Make is a must read for people who like to make, modify, or experiment.

A very interesting take on Porfirian Mexico (late 1800s) through the eyes of a progressive, feminist journalist who was seeing the country and it's social, political, and cultural dynamics through fresh, perceptive eyes.

The ultimate niche book

This book is for only one of two type of people, but if you're one, you must read it. First, it's for all Nellie Bly fans, and they probably don't need to be told.

Second, it's for anyone studying or otherwise interested in 19th Century Mexican History, be it for a PhD or any other reason.

For those folks, this is an absolutely fascinating look at a time and place by someone whose genius hadn't totally formed yet, but who nevertheless presents a penetrating look at this period in history.

For Bly fans like myself, this book should be as fascinating for its flaws as for its moments of genius. For instance, Bly all but believed an old wives tale about marijuana and claimed definitively that not only was it totally safe but that its effects went on for five days.

Clearly, she'd gone on to check such stories much more closely in further years.

Furthermore, much of what's interesting in the book is left to the imagination. She took her mother along on this trip as a chaperone but little is said beyond that. We can only imagine how all that worked out.

She also mentions that she nearly went to jail but only wiggled her way out of it with, "but by means of a little bravado I convinced them that I had the upper hand, and they left me unhurt."

We can only imagine what actually happened, but Bly would figure out how to cleverly figure out of such tight spots routinely in her career.

In conclusion, Nellie Bly fans should view this book as a sort of coming of age book for a journalist about to become a historical figure. For those studying 19th century Mexican hisotry, the Mexico described in this book deserves to make its way into the larger study of Mexican history during this time period.

As seems to be Plautus's theme, most of the characters (at least, the heroes) are slaves. His love for slaves is endearing, but his misogyny quickly grows tiresome and his oafish citizens are, well, oafish. If you're tired of Shakespeare and you want real theatrical literature, "Four Comedies" by Plautus might be the place to go. The translation is beautifully worded with an almost lyrical style, clever word-play, and lots of witticisms.

About the Author

E.J. Milner-Gulland studied Pure and Applied Biology at Oxford University, and then did a PhD in resource management at Imperial College London, modelling the harvesting of elephants, rhinos and saiga antelopes. She held a Junior Research Fellowship at New College Oxford, was a visiting post-doctoral research at the University of British Columbia and then a Lecturer in Mathematical Ecology at the University of Warwick. After that she held a Lecturership in Resource Economics at Imperial College London, and became a Reader and then Professor in Conservation Science, also at Imperial College London. Her current research interests concern the interaction between human decision-making and the dynamics of exploited populations, as well as the ecology and conservation of the migratory saiga antelope in Central Asia.

John Fryxell obtained both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of British Columbia. His PhD research was on the ecology of the white-eared kob - a migratory antelope in the southern Sudan. He held a lectureship at the University of British Columbia and briefly worked with the Government of Newfoundland before assuming a faculty position at the University of Guelph, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology.

Anthony Sinclair has conducted research in Serengeti, Tanzania, since 1965, mainly on the problem of what determines the size of animal populations, particularly vertebrates, and the mechanisms of regulation. This work has expanded to look at the whole ecosystem, documenting how the different components of soils, plants, herbivores and predators interact. In particular, he is interested in how to provide scientific advice for conservation. In Canada he was part of the Kluane Boreal Forest Ecosystem project in the Yukon. This large-scale experiment examined the workings of the northern spruce forests, in particular what caused the 10-year cycle of snowshoe hare numbers. Between 1992 and 2002 Dr. Sinclair collaborated with colleagues in the CSIRO, Sustainable Ecosystems division, Commonwealth Government of Australia in experiments on the conservation of endangered marsupial prey and their exotic predators, the red fox and feral cats.

Not Good

This book is the worst. The chapter review questions aren't even covered in the book to help you do them. When the codes are provided, they don't work. The homework questions don't make sense. This book is nothing but a waste of paper and it was a waste of my money! I don't recommend this to ANYONE! Find a different book, find a different ANYTHING! This is nothing but a headache and will cause you (and your students) nothing but stress and you will spend more time on GOOGLE figuring out what to do than the book. DO NOT BUY!!!!!
