As the title says, your basic NMR spectroscopy catelog.

NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for chemists interested in structure, dynamics and function of molecular systems. The success of this technique has lead to a proliferation of experiments yielding a wealth of data about chemical structure ranging from small molecules to not-so-small proteins and beyond. The authors have compiled a core of NMR experiments that will serve a student new to the field or an old-hand who has forgotten the phase-cycle of a particular pulse sequence. The book is sectioned into 14 chapters with the 1st two being introductory ( What is a NMR spectrometer and why is it sitting away from everything else? or If I have radiation dampening do I need to get a mop?). The next 10 chapters take the reader from routine spectroscopy experiments to a variety of 1- and 2- dimensional liquid NMR experiments with and without magnetic field gradients. The last two chapters introduce the reader to some basic 3-dimensional liquid sequences and solids NMR spectroscopy. These two subjects could have been extended but I imagine we will see that in the next volume, 150 to 300 NMR experiments. There are 160 (according to my count) different experiments and measurements discussed and each is organized to familarize the experimenter with the purpose of the experiment, the procedure to perform it, and some expected results for the experiment. The authors have wisely included a readers observation area for each section. This allows the utility of the book to grow as the reader gains experience with each NMR method. This book should be in any NMR laboratory and would be an added help to any course using NMR spectroscopy. I know any undergraduate organic chemistry course should get an attendance boost from experiment 8.15 where the students would determine the alcohol content in polish vodka. (As a student I would have suggested a more hands on approach.) The final upshot is this is an great compendium and should be a staple in any NMR laboratory period.

An incredible spellbinding read!! An all-time favorite!

Ian Dunross, in a driving torrential rain, arrives at the Struan Building in Hong Kong. There he meets with Alastair Struan, the current tai pan (ultimate ruler) of the Noble House. At this meeting Struan confers the title of tai pan on Dunross and he must take an oath to uphold the traditions and oaths established by the first tai pan and founder of the Noble House, Dirk Struan, one of the first and certainly the mightiest of the China Traders from the early 19th century. At this meeting Dunross discovers that a ship containing a disproportionate amount of the Noble House's uninsured wealth has gone down imperiling the House's future.

The book then jumps forward three years, to August of 1963, and the Noble House's financial predicament has grown, if anything, worse. Linc Bartlett, an American billionaire, and his ambitious and stunningly beautiful prot�g�, K. C. Tcholok arrive in Hong Kong aboard his private Boeing 707 (remember this is 1963). They are in Hong Kong to establish a presence in the lucrative Oriental markets and to make a deal with the Noble House or one of its competitors.

Hidden in the wheel-well of the jet are rifles, ammunition, and grenades which are strictly prohibited in Hong Kong. Their origin as well as their purpose is revealed to us gradually as we come to know the protagonist and current tai-pan, Ian Dunross and the multitude of complex problems that he must contend with.

We discover early on that there is a Judas Iscariot in the Noble House, the comprador Phillip Chen's son, John Chen, who is inexplicably kidnapped. Bartlett is playing the Noble House against it's arch-enemy and biggest competitor, Rothwell-Gornt run by Quillan Gornt, a descendant of Tyler Brock who is the arch-enemy of the first tai-pan, Dirk Struan. Gornt is using his former mistress, Orlanda Ramos, to spy on Bartlett and to manipulate him into a favorable disposition toward his company.

Ian Dunross has a highly secret source of intelligence named Alan Medford Grant from a London Strategic Planning Institute and one of his reports to the tai-pan is intercepted by Roger Crosse of Hong Kong Special Intelligence. Shortly afterwards Grant turns up dead in England as a result of foul play. The information in Grant's reports are yet another important element in the complex tale crafted by Clavell. We learn from the report that the Noble House has a Russian mole within and that there is a mole high up in the Hong Kong government.

Nearly every rivalry and association has its roots in the past dating back to at least the original China traders of the early 19th century. Clavell does a marvelous job of integrating the past and the present drawing on his knowledge not only of China and the Orient, but of high finance with repeated references to Sun Tzu's "Art of War."

Even some of the characters from Clavell's marvelous "King Rat" make an appearance. The King himself does not appear and is only alluded to, but Robin Grey, as a labor MP and Socialist sympathizer, and Peter Marlowe, a writer and thinly disguised James Clavell himself do appear.

Clavell is an astute observer of human nature enabling him to craft an amazingly complex and engaging tale tying together a multitude of disparate elements in a believable manner that is too often overlooked in todays half-baked novels. This book is long at over 1300 pages but well worth the effort. I would recommend reading Clavell's "Tai Pan" first, if possible, but this is not mandatory.

I first read this book on a vacation to Harbor Island in 1981 and was so utterly absorbed by the book that I ignored many of my social responsibilities.

I've just completed reading the book again at age 54 and have actually enjoyed it MORE than the first time I read it. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Clavell takes to Hong Kong

Clavell was perhaps the greatest Western writer of Asian historical fiction. In this epic novel he captures the spirit of the Western trading companies as they maneuver in British Hong Kong. We find out what has happened to the house and lineage first created in Taipan, and how the trials and tribulations have been passed from generation to generation.

This book captures many of the strengths of the entire series:

- Characters are portrayed as complex individuals, not just one dimensional drones

- There's tons of history and cultural lessons hidden between the story lines

- Character lines are carried cross-book in the series

Definitely a solid (if not short) read!

Huge, engrossing novel!!!

This book doesn't have the historical sweep, grandeur and other-worldly feel of SHOGUN, but it is even more densely packed with political and personal machinations, intrigue, "pillowing," colorful characters and tension than any of Clavell's other books. I began it with feelings of apprehension, thinking "Oh, no, 1400 pages of Hong Kong corporate intrigue...how good can THAT be?"
Well, it's pretty darn good!!! Yes, there's corporate intrigue, but it's actually kept to a minimum. There are murder mysteries, kidnappings, disasters, sexual intrigue, huge sums of money being thrown around, and lots of detailed glimpses into the psyche of the Chinese, Europeans and just the unique world of Hong Kong in general.
If I could have, the book would get 4.5 stars. I have just a couple of problems with it. 1) As in TAI PAN and GAI JIN, the end of the book features a major natural disaster which has the effect of sorting out some of the problems the main characters are having...it feels like a deux ex machina from a Greek tragedy, especially now that Clavell has done it three times! 2) The ending feels a bit rushed. We've invested 1300+ pages into the book and its interesting characters...a richer ending would be in order. (Although for rushed, unsatisfying endings, you can't beat GAI JIN!)
That being said, the book is richly rewarding, and frankly, quite amazing. Clavell has successfully juggled perhaps dozens of storylines and scores of characters. The outline for the book alone must have been hundreds of pages. And all of it takes place in the course of one week!
Please, if you haven't read other Clavell books, read them in order!!! They are all great, but to be truly appreciated, they BEG to be read in order: SHOGUN, TAI PAN, GAI JIN, KING RAT, NOBLE HOUSE and WHIRLWIND. All are very rewarding, exciting reads.

David Costa is Dean of Faculty and one of the founders of Robert Kennedy College. He read law at the School of Law of the University of Northumbria, Newcastle, and graduated with an LL.M degree. He complemented his legal studies with the Advanced Project Management Program, Stanford University, from which he graduated with the widely respected title of Stanford Certified Project Manager. He then expanded his knowledge of business through the Entrepreneurship Development Programme of the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dean Costa also holds a BA in Business Studies from the University of Derby, an MBA in eCommerce from the Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland and a Ph.D. in Strategy, Programme and Project Management from the Skema Business School (ESC Lille) with a thesis that dealt with index-based commodity investments. Prof. Costa lectures in the area of Investment and Money Management and is a frequent guest on several business televisions channels CNBC Europe and Bloomberg Television. His recent research on risk adjusted portfolios with both stocks and commodities has been used for the creation of a swiss publicly traded investment certificate issued by the second largest German Bank, Commerzbank AG. He is the author of “The Art of Banking: Dominate the Banking Landscape and Win the War without Fighting a Battle” and of “The Portable Private Banker”

Investment could be fun!

Few months ago I was pretty sure that investments are for anybody but me - today I have totally changed my mind thanks to the valuable content and advises I received reading "The Portable Private Banker". Definitely the best guide towards investments and private banking! I would highly recommend it to anyone willing to get familiar with the investment world and planning to go further.

Several years of Dr. David Costa's hard work, research and his practical experience was expressed in this book "Portable Private Banker" in a commendable way that any lay man in "investment / money management" subject can understand those practical examples.

This book consists of lot of information on (1) Actively Managed Funds, (2) ETFs, (3) Commodities and (4) Asset Allocation through various instruments like Funds and ETFs, recommended by Dr. David with his practical experience.

I had zero knowledge in Money Management initially but after reading this book (ofcourse I had to read multiple times) and started analyzing that information, I've gained sufficient confindence in investments.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn "investment / money management" subject either for academic purposes or for personal learnings.

A convenient portable private banker

Wow this book make a beginner easy! How? First it explains in plain language for reader to understand basic investment, then it deals with investor's emotions and losses, this is where a lot of investors, be it beginners or season investors must face.

Then it flows through the investment in funds and Exchange Traded Funds. It educates investors on asset allocation through funds and ETFs and in addition it even giving investors reliable sources of funds. It is something like giving choices of good funds to select, it is entirely up to an individual's risk appetite. After reading the whole book, the "Portable Private Banker" really means business and real portable, I can carry my private banker anywhere I go!

Unclear Who the Intended Audience Is

If you are an ESL (English as a Second Language) learner looking for a handy list of words that you ought to have in your vocabulary, then you might find this book to be useful. If you are writing a paper for school, or a report for work, you could also get something out of it. The question is, how much will it help you?

WHAT'S IN THERE?
----------------------------------
Most of the words are rather basic. So, it would seem to be geared toward language learners. Yet, the entries are written at a relatively high level. They begin with fairly standard dictionary definitions for the word, followed (in some cases) with explanations of usage, and related words/phrases.

DOES THIS APPROACH WORK?
----------------------------------
This approach works well for a word like "rapid" on page 103, where the author has the example sentence "There has been a rapid rise in sales." Not so well for "sanguine" on page 112, where the author has the example sentence "He is sanguine about the remorseless advance of information." I have used the word sanguine in conversation before, but I can think of many other words that I would recommend mastering instead if you are at a level where "rapid" is causing you difficulty.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
----------------------------------
A book of 1001 words at the same level as "rapid" for a language learner would be great. A book of 1001 words at the same level as "sanguine" for a college student or a person in business would be great. This book is an ungainly mix of the two. There are other books that address both audiences better.

OTHER BOOKS

First, I would recommend you consider buying this book for the fantastic lists of words at the back (pages 147-166). Then, take a look at the following works. They are arranged from basic to advanced:
-Cobuild English Language Dictionary 2nd Edition: Helping Learners with Real English (Cobuild Series): Impressive reference work for language learners. Armed with the list of words from this book, you should be able to make good use of the dictionary. I think it has something to offer native English speakers as well, so it is worth a look.
-Choose the Right Word: Second Edition: Good for language learners AND businesspeople/students (all of us?). I think it is more successful than this book at addressing the needs of both audiences.
-The Synonym Finder: It lacks explanations and usage examples, so it is probably most appropriate for those with a high level of English language ability. I feel that the entries are far more helpful than those in a regular thesaurus.
-The Thinker's Thesaurus: Sophisticated Alternatives to Common Words (Expanded Second Edition): Good for anyone who wants to make the jump from a high level of English language usage to an advanced one. You may be using the word "intercourse" in your everyday speech and writing, but what about "houghmagandy," tribadism," "venery," or "intromission?" Consider this book a step-up from your regular thesaurus.

The third volume of this invaluable sourcebook covers three main subject areas. First, the metaphysics of Aristotle's logical works: the concepts of universal and particular underwent surprising transformations in this period, which gave rise to debates, still raging today, on personal survival after an interruption such as death. Second, logic in a more conventional sense: perhaps the most impressive debate was on the existence of the subject in singular and universal statements. There was also debate about the very different Aristotelian and Stoic conceptions of syllogism, of modal logic, of induction, of the nature of mathematics, and of philosophy of language. Third, the higher metaphysics of the Neoplatonists taught Augustine, and indirectly Descartes, to look for truth within themselves. The Neoplatonists struggled with the question whether our higher intellectual selves have distinct individuality, and thus they fed both sides in the great medieval debate between Aquinas and the followers of Averroes on individual human immortality. All sources appear in English translation and are carefully linked and cross-referenced by editorial comment and explanation. Bibliographies are provided throughout.

This is the third (metaphysics and logic) out of three magnificent academic volumes treating the subject of neo-Platonism, during its emergence to a position of dominance around the 200-600 AD era. This three-fold series comprises a condensed collection of neo-Platonic commentary on Aristotle as glossed by authors who generally believed Plato and Aristotle to, by and large, agree on main points of philosophical doctrine. Selections are drawn from the extensive 'Ancient Commentators on Aristotle' series and are arranged here in an orderly manner according to topical-matter. Detailed explanatory notes and headings, with cross-references, accompany the primary textual matter, making this series a superior educational tool for serious readers interested in late classical/early medieval philosophy. In addition to this work on Psychology, Ethics and Religion, volume two treats of ancient Physics and three of Logic and Metaphysics: they are all to be read and enjoyed collectively. As a recommendation, J. Dillon and L.P. Gerson's 'Neoplatonic Philosophy: Introductory Readings' will be an excellent primer for these more advanced selections of philosophical writings. Q. Are you refuting the concept that it takes ten years of practice to get great at anything?

Po Bronson: Not at all, we feel our book is additive to that story. Nobody is judged on how they practice. They're judged on how they perform when it counts. Practicing is not the same as competing. You can pitch a million baseballs to your son until he perfects his swing--but wait until he faces a pitcher who wants him to miss. You might have ten years of experience in the advertising industry, but how do you handle the day your biggest client tells you they're leaving for a rival agency?

Ashley Merryman: The truth is, nobody puts in ten years before they start competing. The world doesn't work that way. We are all thrown into competitive situations, long before we've had enough practice. Our results are still judged; our fate is still determined by how we do. To survive these trials, we need more than practice. We need competitive fire.

Q. Did researching this book change how you each compete?

Ashley Merryman: I'm a girl. All my life, I've been told to "play nice." I heard it on the playground and then the grown-up version they say in boardrooms: women are better at coalition-building, not competing. The science says that's wrong. And it's not just about toughening up. Women are prone to weigh risks more carefully than men; when women are confident they have a good chance to succeed, they'll compete. Sometimes this is an asset (in certain domains), but sometimes it's a hindrance. I've learned to recognize when to tap into my gender's knack for risk-analysis, and when to ignore it.

Po Bronson: I didn't let many people know it, but before working on this book, I'd had a full-hip replacement and a few unsuccessful surgeries on my leg. I had many setbacks during rehab; I could barely walk at times. This affected every dimension of my life--it sapped my energy for my writing work and my volunteer projects. I was just losing my edge and my will to fight. Researching the book inspired me; it reminded me who I am. It restored my zeal for attacking big challenges. I hope the book does that for readers, first and foremost: gets them eager to surmount the challenges in their lives.

Q. Everyone says that companies must innovate to remain competitive--but does it work the other way around? Doesn't competition destroy creativity?

Po Bronson: There is a belief that creative genius is fragile and needs to be shielded from competition and comparison. But the research says that's a myth. Leonardo da Vinci loved to have his art put side by side with the work of others for debate over whose was best; Bach, too, liked to compete against other musicians in public concerts. Chemical fire extinguishers, food canning, transcontinental air travel--each began as the prize winner of a competition. Competition doesn't kill creativity: it facilitates creative output by supplying motivational drive.

Ashley Merryman: Whether professional musicians or school children, studies have shown competition fuels creativity and even improves the quality of the work produced. More than that, the skills that make you a great competitor--such as a willingness to push boundaries, trust one's instincts, problem-solve--those are the same skills needed for innovation.

Now I know why playing not to lose typically means you do

I grabbed this book thinking it might give me some insight into the people that I manage. More specifically, I wanted to learn about teams, team dynamics, and what differentiated winning teams from losers. Instead I got a book very much focused on the individual. Why do we compete. How much anxiety does it create to compete and how do different people handle it.

The nice thing about the authors is they are basing their book off of countless scientific studies. You don't get a lot of trite statements or colloquialisms. The authors are good at taking the evidence of these studies and creating a compelling story.

In the end, I learned several things about the differences between men and women in terms of competition, anxiety levels in competitors, playing not to lose, etc. I just wish there was more coverage on teams and the inner dynamics of winning teams.

Well written. Well researched. A good solid read.

Great read, but lacks advice

Very well written and a joy to read. As someone who has to often synthesize scientific evidence for my job as a researcher what the authors have accomplished is no small feat. I only wish there was more research presented on how to teach children how to be good at competing like assessing when to compete and when not to, how to handle losing, how to handle the physiologic stress of entering into competition....etc. I disagree with one section where the authors conclude, after telling the story of how 5% of top coders win 80% of the prize money, that competition is inherently good and fun. Well it's only good and fun for that 5%.

Fascinating, But Not So Practical

This is a very interesting book and an easy read for those of us who like to understand human behavior and psychology. It is filled with often counter-intuitive information about why competitiveness is actually good. There are some broad ideas that can be gleaned for parents, teachers, and managers about various things that might improve performance, but it is really not a guide for individuals. When you have finished this book, you won't have a list of things to do to improve your chances of good performance, but you will have an idea about the kinds of things that matter. So this is a thoughtful book for thoughtful people. Hopefully others will be prompted to provide more practical advice for people to follow.

Having said all this, I still easily recommend this book for people who are curious about what makes people perform well.
