The Kitchen... SO much more than a cookbook

This is more than just a cookbook, folks. Jay and Tweezy have worked for years now to bring you their story. At times, I've been lucky enough to be able to play a small part in that story. So I could not have been more excited when my book-shaped package finally arrived. And let me tell you... it did not disappoint.

Hearing Uncle Tweezy wax and wane about the past 30+ years of growing, at times you may ask yourself when you signed up for this seemingly impromptu advanced seminar in botany. Seriously though, this guy KNOWS HIS STUFF. This isn't your standard, follow-the-directions grow book. It's so much more. Indeed, it's incredible to see a lifetime of knowledge about growing and the beautiful plant herself fill the pages of this gorgeous book. Speaking of which...

Did I mention how gorgeous the book is? I'm a bit of a coffee book collector (you know they're ALWAYS good for leafing through around 4:20), and the quality of this book is top-of-the-line. The pictures leap off the page -- I'll admit that I may have even ripped off a piece of a page, put it in my grinder, and tried to roll a fatty with it. And when that didn't work, I just turned back to the book and comforted myself with more stellar, high definition photos of some of the world's most exotic offerings.

If you know Jay and Tweezy, then it should come as no surprise to find out the kind of quality they put into the physical creation of this book -- hell, I think Uncle Tweezy might've even had to learn basic Chinese in order to interface with the shipping company. Quality is the name of the game when it comes to these guys, and no where is that more apparent than in the pages of The Kitchen. If you want to learn how to not just grow a plant, but how to understand it as a living, breathing being, then this is the book for you. Honestly, it might just be impossible to come away from The Kitchen without a fresh desire to try growing these beauties yourself.

But to call the Kitchen simply a cannabis cookbook is akin to calling MonkeyBoy Kush just another strain -- it just falls short. The Kitchen is, in its most simple terms, the story of two men living the American dream, working with their hands everyday to create a top-shelf product that surpasses the consumer's needs. With the progressive legalization movement fully in swing, we need as many positive advocates leading the charge towards educating the American public as possible. Jay and Tweezy are fantastic representatives for this movement, and for growers around the world. Plain and simple, if you dig bud, this is THE book for you.

Stunning photos and loaded with information

The books photos will take your breath away. Even if Cannabis isn't your thing the beautiful blooming buds shown throughout the Coffee Table size book, along with photographs of flowers you are treated to a wealth of knowledge on growing in different mediums from experts who are growing it and exploring it for not only recreational use, but also, for medicinal purposes. No matter whether you are a beginner or an advanced grower there is something for you in the book, it may even show you something you have been missing.. It is not often you find such a book filled with photos and simple instructions. Easy to follow. I look forward to exploring some of the concepts covered in the book. Cloning is one such issue I'm looking forward to trying. IT would also make a great gift for a friend. Everyone is a beginner sometimes. So whether you got one plant in your closet or if you have a warehouse full of hydroponic plants, you will enjoy this book.

You want to learn how to grow? BUY THIS BOOK.

After feeling somewhat intimidated about starting my own grow, I obtained this book and was pleasantly surprised. I can do this! There are very specific instructions on how to do EVERYTHING from beginning to end, complete with easy-to-follow pictorials. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the book as well as the pictures inside. This is most definitely a "coffee-table book" and should be set out for all to see. There's not a person who has come to my house who hasn't thumbed through it awe!

This is a wonderful play to read. Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering make a bet that they can take a poor flower girl, Eliza Doolitle, and pass her off as a duchess. The pair teaches her perfect English, manners, and how to dress like a lady. They succeed, but they don't realize Eliza has her own opinions. This play is great because you really get a feel for the early Victorian era and Shaw's feminist views.

Although I love Pygmalion, this is an ABRIDGED version. Many scenes are not included, particularly at the end of each act. If you want an unabridged version, I would suggest the Penguin Classics edition.

The combination is simultaneously thrilling and embarrassing. Shasa Courtney is a wealthy United Party minister to the South African Parliament. A moderate of English heritage, he is often opposed to the Nationalist Party's Manfred De La Rey, an Afrikaner. Their mother, the matriarchal Centaine Courtney-Malcomess, is able to mediate their conflicts but not to control Shasa's wife, Tara, who sympathizes with the black cause. It is Tara who falls in love with the black Moses Gama, an advocate of violent opposition to apartheid. All their stories intermingle with the history of South Africa in the '50s and '60s. Smith's account of some of the worst racial riots is terrifying and his storytelling powers are strong, but readers of Rage will likely come away wondering whether turgid sub-plots really enhance a novel about one of the world's most troubled countries.

Smith continues the family saga set in South Africa which he began in The Burning Shore and The Power of the Sword. This new novel focuses on the half brothers, Shasa Courtney and Manfred De La Rey, now high officials in the Nationalist government. During the mounting protest and violence brought on by apartheid in the 1950s and early 1960s, these former enemies find themselves working together to save the land they both love. Other family members are involved too. Michael, one of Shasa's sons, becomes a reporter who opposes apartheid, while Lothar, Manfred's son, is a policeman who enforces it. The interlocking stories of these and many others, set against the authentic African historical and cultural background that Smith so effectively provides, produces both a compelling tale and some real insights into South Africa. Engrossing if not totally original generational epic.

Wilbur Smith has been turning out novels since the 1960's. He has lived in most of the southern nations of Africa and experienced many of the turbulant times that he has written about. Though he sometimes uses cliches ranging from broad shoulderd heros to sophisticated intelligent but very evil villians his novels deliver one to Africa. RAGE is either the fourth or perhaps the fifth installment of the Courtenay saga. It begins in the late 40's and concludes in the sixties with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa reaching violent levels. The other books in this generational series are engrossing,but like all good recreational reads their intellectual content are minimual. In RAGE Smith takes a hard look at his country and it's tragic past. Plus when this book was written Mandella was still in prison and Apartheid was the law of the land. This book must have been a difficult venture for the author, but he accomplishes the task very well. I strongly reccomend not just this work, but all his novels. they are exciting and just plain fun. Give him a try next time you are at your local bookstore and leave the latest Grisham or Crichton on the shelve. You won't be sorry.

Wilbur Smith never fails to capture me with his writings. Rage is a wonderful depiction of a whole different world in South Africa. While he changes a few details it is still a very good indication of a life that many Americans do not understand. While entertaining us with his magnificent choice of words he is also educating us on a life style or self-being of the South African person. I actually find his books very helpful in understanding the world my fiance was born. When someone asks me why I love his work so much my reply is simply, "I can see his words" Absolutely wonderful.

Rage is based on Nelson Mandella's life. Wilbur Smith bases all of his books on fact, so you learn about the cultures of each of the tribes, politics, etc. Only his characters are fictional. Rage is a TERRIFIC READ! The book, River God, is the only exception. Buy it--I promise you won't be able to put it down!

Cultural Chronicles

Having read some of Monsivais works in Spanish, including his thoughts as reflected in the Mexican press, I was extremely pleased to see a book of his finally available in the English language.This book is written with the sharp, critical eye of Carlos Monsivais whose commentary on Mexican culture is astounding and full of insight. Monsivais reflects in his unique style; part history lesson, part social commentary, his analysis of events leads the reader to draw their own conclusions as he plays devils advocate and torch bearer all at once. With a keen eye for historical significance he portrays the icons of society in their greater majesty, their ultimate place in history, their affect on the mores and values of society at large. He goes one step further illustrating the consequences of the media and the political machines behind the people and the images and their lasting effect on the minds and hearts of the Mexican people. He tackles a variety of subjects including the literary works of Juan Rulfo, the lovely matinee idol, Dolores Del Rio, the everymans comic, Cantinflas, with his legendary ability to say so much and never say anything and the lexicon of the pachuco via the verbal collage of Tin Tan. Monsivais does not just limit his analysis to the field of entertainment as he examines religion and the role of the Boy Fidencio, Guadalupismo and Chrsitianity. Naturally he critiques the government, its contemporary leaders as well as historical figures and even examines the Zapatistas. No part of society is sacred as he lends criticism to many subjects dear to many peoples hearts including the romantic bolero. Of particular interest is his scathing view of Mexico's penchant for gory details in the tabloid press where daily one can find a picture of dead person lying in the street with the bloody headlines screeming at you to come closer and take a look. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found the author to give a fasinating peek into Mexcian culture. If you are interested in Mexcian culture I would recommend this book. If you read Spanish I would also recommened his articles in the Mexican press and two books of note, "Amor Perdido" and " Rituales del Caos" where he does much of the same only examining other aspects of Mexican society.

When his father died in 1996, Wieseltier began to observe the Jewish rituals of the traditional year of mourning, going three times daily to synagogue to recite Kaddish, the prayer for the dead. Between the prayers and his daily work as literary editor of the New Republic, he sought out ancient, medieval and modern Jewish texts in an effort to understand the history and meaning of Kaddish. He discovered that early texts dictated that the mourner's kaddish be recited only on Saturday nights, but the prayers were prolonged so that the souls of the sinners of Israel released from Gehenna would not hurry back to hell. Wieseltier reports that through his study and practice of Kaddish he realized that the past is at the mercy of the present. "The present can condemn the past to oblivion or obscurity," he notes. "Whatever happens to the past will happen to it posthumously. And so the saga of the family is also the saga of the tradition." Wieseltier provides a work of history, philosophy and spiritual memoir where he deals with the meaning of freedom and the perplexity of tradition. His book demonstrates how the practice of religion meets the needs of a troubled soul.

A beautiful journal/journey

This "Gentile reader" (as compared to the 19th century "gentle reader") loved this oh-so-Jewish work. Mr. Wieseltier's book is meditative and beautiful, more like bedside reading (dip in a bit at a time) than a strict narrative. I have read with some bemusement the reviewers here who didn't like it. They seem threatened by an intellectual man who uses his full intellect to consider his faith, or lack of it. Personally, I found this book elegant, engaging, and full of warmth and even occasional humor. My own father is dying, and it helped me ponder his circumstances while thinking about my eventual response to his impending death. Magnificent work.

Brilliant, thoughtful and deeply felt

It's impossible to categorize this book, because it simply doesn't fit into any conventional category. I'll have to explain exactly what it is: a journal kept by the author in the year after his father's death, in which he researches, ruminates, and comments on Judaism. The book is so intense that I got the impression that he spent the entire year (a) saying kaddish and (b) sitting in a tea room poring over ancient manuscripts. It's a privelege to get a chance to peek into the results of an entire year of study -- not to mention the mind of the author, who at times is brilliant. He is not trying to apologize for anything or to prove anything: he is simply, and honestly, thinking. This is not a book to be read in one sitting; I found myself reading a few pages at a time and then thinking about them. But the book is so well-written that I was in no rush to finish.

scholarly, pedantic,even, yet somehow emotional too

I could not wait to read this book. And I could not put it down. I was filled with awe at the scholarship of Jewish people when the rest of Europe was illiterate and uncivilized. I was amazed by the compassionate (and occasionally not so compassionate) views the rabbis had towards mourners and mourning. I learned more than I had thought I could about this odd practice, which Wieseltier made odder still. I agree with all the comments about narcissism, pomposity and the like becuase the author epitomizes those traits and others like them but in my opinion the book transcends its author's limitations and was utterly fascinating in its breadth and depth. As it maddened me at times and lost me in its obscurity at others I was among those who couldn't put it down. By having slogged through this mighty tome, I felt that my kaddish for my own father was enriched.
And in the end, with all the pedantry and scholasticism and weight, the author ends in a spiritual and emotional way.
I imagined him having a relationship with his father in death, through the creation of this book, that he could not have during his father's life. And to that, amen.
