The second edition of Finite Element Analysis, consisting of 15 chapters, includes a number of new features and changes that were incorporated in response to suggestions and requests made by professors, students, and professionals using the first edition of the book. The major features include:

There are many good textbooks already in existence that cover the theory of finite element methods for advanced students. However, none of these books incorporate ANSYS as an integral part of their materials to introduce finite element modeling to undergraduate students and newcomers. In recent years, the use of finite element analysis as a design tool has grown rapidly. Easy-to-use, comprehensive packages such as ANSYS, a general-purpose finite element computer program, have become common tools in the hands of design engineers. Unfortunately, many engineers who lack the proper training or understanding of the underlying concepts have been using these tools. This introductory book is written to assist engineering students and practicing engineers new to the field of finite element modeling to gain a clear understanding of the basic concepts. The text offers insight into the theoretical aspects of finite element analysis and also covers some practical aspects of modeling. Great care has been exercised to avoid overwhelming students with theory, yet enough theoretical background is offered to allow individuals to use ANSYS intelligently and effectively. ANSYS is an integral part of this text. In each chapter, the relevant basic theory is discussed first and demonstrated using simple problems with hand calculations. These problems are followed by examples that are solved using ANSYS. Exercises in the text are also presented in this manner. Some exercises require manual calculations, while others, more complex in nature, require the use of ANSYS. The simpler hand-calculation problems will enhance students' understanding of the concepts by encouraging them to go through the necessary steps in a finite element analysis. Design problems are also included at the end of Chapters 3, 4, 6, and 9 through 14.

Various sources of error that can contribute to incorrect results are discussed. A good engineer must always find ways to check the results. While experimental testing of models may be the best way, such testing may be expensive or time consuming. Therefore, whenever possible, throughout this text emphasis is placed on doing a "sanity check" to verify one's finite element analysis (FEA). A section at the end of each appropriate chapter is devoted to possible approaches for verifying ANSYS results.

Another unique feature of this book is that the last two chapters are devoted to the introduction of design, material selection, optimization, and parametric programming with ANSYS.

The book is organized into 15 chapters. Chapter 1 reviews basic ideas in finite element analysis. Common formulations, such as direct, potential energy, and weighted residual methods are discussed. Chapter 2 provides a comprehensive review of matrix algebra. Chapter 3 deals with the analysis of trusses, because trusses offer economical solutions to many engineering structural problems. An overview of the ANSYS program is given in Chapter 3 so that students can begin to use ANSYS right away. Finite element formulation of members under axial loading, beams, and frames are introduced in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 lays the foundation for analysis of one-dimensional problems by introducing one-dimensional linear, quadratic, and cubic elements. Global, local, and natural coordinate systems are also discussed in detail in Chapter 5. An introduction to isoparametric formulation and numerical integration by Gauss-Legendre formulae are also presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 considers Galerkin formulation of one-dimensional heat transfer and fluid problems. Two-dimensional linear and higher order elements are introduced in Chapter 7. Gauss-Legendre formulae for two-dimensional integrals are also presented in Chapter 7. In Chapter 8 the essential capabilities and the organization of the ANSYS program are covered. The basic steps in creating and analyzing a model with ANSYS is discussed in detail. Chapter 9 includes the analysis of two-dimensional heat transfer problems with a section devoted to unsteady situations. Chapter 10 provides analysis of torsion of noncircular shafts and plane stress problems. Dynamic problems are explored in Chapter 11. Review of dynamics and vibrations of mechanical and structural systems are also given in this chapter. In Chapter 12, two-dimensional, ideal fluid-mechanics problems are analyzed. Direct formulation of the piping network problems and underground seepage flow are also discussed. Chapter 13 provides a discussion of three-dimensional elements and formulations. This chapter also presents basic ideas regarding top-down and bottom-up solid modeling methods. The last two chapters of the book are devoted to design and optimization ideas. Design process and material selection are explained in Chapter 14. Design optimization ideas and parametric programming are discussed in Chapter 15. Each chapter begins by stating the objectives and concludes by summarizing what the reader should have gained from studying that chapter.

The examples that are solved using ANSYS show in great detail how to use ANSYS to model and analyze a variety of engineering problems. Chapter 8 is also written such that it can be taught right away if the instructor sees the need to start with ANSYS.

A brief review of appropriate fundamental principles in solid mechanics, heat transfer, dynamics, and fluid mechanics is also provided throughout the book. Additionally, when appropriate; students are warned about becoming too quick to generate finite element models for problems for which there exist simple analytical solutions. Mechanical and thermophysical properties of some common materials used in engineering are given in appendices A and B. Appendices C and D give properties of common area shapes and properties of structural steel shapes, respectively. Examples of ANSYS batch files are given in Appendix F.

A good book for begninners in FE.

The book presents the "black box" behind the GUI. The author wrote the book especially for FE beginners. Ansys users will get the maximum benefit out of it. The book starts by explaining the various formulations applied in FEM. Then, 1D, 2D and 3D elements are presented, followed by simple and clear analytical applications in the field of structural, thermal and fluids. In the second half, the book introduces Ansys and then put it at work through a number of examples. The book/author has the merit of keeping the theory and examples simple and to the point. It is probably the only of its kind. This book is a must for beginners in the FEM.

This is a good book for the basics in the FE method. It does teach how to use Ansys as well but of course having a tutorial dedicated to the program itself is always a better option.
If an introduction is what you need then this book is for you, if not there are many titles out dedicated to this topic though I really recommend this book to anyone trying to learn on their own.

Excellent for All Singers and Jazz Instrumentalists

I have sampled all of the vocal practice products on Amazon, and I think this one is the best. The singer has a beautiful voice, the rhythm section is top-notch, and the production is excellent. The concept and structure are well thought out to make you a better singer, and provide you with tools for modal improvisation. There is a lot of material. I could see doing the warm up and then working on a different mode each day as a great daily routine.

Practicing along with the CD will help all singers improve their vocal technique, regardless of their preferred genre. Beginners will not find instruction on basic vocal technique, but if you have had some voice lessons or choral experience, the CD provides basic exercises to warm up and improve your voice.

All types of singers will enjoy working on the modes. Some classical singers might not think modes would be useful, but I think that working with them will improve your ear and intonation, and also provide variety in your practice. Maybe it will open you to trying some jazz, too.

I think jazz instrumentalists would also benefit from practicing along with the CD, either with their instruments or voices. You can't play your horn while you are driving, but you could sing along with the CD and internalize the modes, and the chords they are used over. Doing a little scat singing over the "you try it" tracks will certainly help you to generate ideas for improvising on your instrument.

I have been teaching jazz/pop improv for voice for many years. I have tried many, many different books & methods and pieced together bits from each to enhance & reinforce what I am teaching. This book is wonderful. Judy sings in tune. Her examples are excellent. She swings and so does her band. I ask my students to order copies so that they can work to improve more between lessons. Worth the purchase. The best I have found for what I teach.

William H. Press holds the Raymer Chair in Computer Sciences and Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin.

Saul A. Teukolsky is H. A. Bethe Professor in Physics in the Radiophysics and Space Research Department of Cornell University.

William Vetterling is a Research Fellow and Director of the Image Science Laboratory at ZINK Imaging, LLC in Waltham, MA. His career includes eight years on the physics faculty at Harvard and 20 years of numerical modeling and laboratory research on digital imaging at Polaroid Corporation.

Brian P. Flannery is Science, Strategy and Programs Manager at Exxon Mobil Corporation.

Valuable book, but not worth an upgrade

Bottom line up front: Every computational scientist should own a copy of Numerical Recipes but, if you already own a previous version, then don't bother upgrading.

I already owned a copy of "Numerical Recipes in C, 2nd Edition" (from 1992), so I was absolutely thrilled when I saw that the book had been updated in over 15 years. This is why I was so underwhelmed with the 3rd edition. As a previous reviewer noted, the vast majority of the book is largely unchanged.

As in previous editions, the authors do a great job of providing codes that cover the spectrum of topics encountered by researchers. As in previous editions, the authors still take the "give a man a fish" instead of the "teach a man to fish" method. This might seem like a negative but, in my opinion, this is why every scientist should own a copy of Numerical Recipes. Often, topics pop up that need immediate solving and one can often find a code for the topic in Numerical Recipes. As in previous editions, Numerical Recipes is really just an annotated code repository, with very stringent/restrictive licensing rules by the way!

However, as the authors note in the introduction, they made a conscious decision to fill pages with verbatim codes, not building insight into various topics. In my experience, the codes given in Numerical Recipes get the job done, but these tend to be simple and less efficient than other well-known algorithms.

As in previous editions, Numerical Recipes is a terrible pedagogical text. If you're interesting in understanding a particular topic, then get a special-purpose book.

A licensing disaster

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is basically an annotated code repository of solutions to specific algorithmic problems, and the algorithms are good. However, if you want to *use* these solutions in your products, forget it. You'll need to pay (thousands of dollars per year, potentially) for the privilege of an institutional license, and even then you can't incorporate any of the algorithms into a commercial software product. The code is therefore useless. Worse than useless, actually, because if a company owns the book and then uses an algorithm contained in it - even if derived from a different source - it runs the risk of getting sued for licensing violations because they've seen the book. No thanks.

If the authors went with some kind of traditional open-source license instead, that would be terrific. Right now, it looks like financial greed has gotten in the way of the dissemination of good ideas.

Copyright Idiocy!

People, stop buying and using this book! The copyright is prohibitive. It is not that they are greedy and want to make money from it. They won't sell you the rights to use any of these algorithms in commercial products, period. They are just stupid.

And don't give your code to a friend or coworker. You just violated the copyright.

Several coworkers have given me simulations with NR code buried in it. I can't use them. It is ILLEGAL!

Stop! Stop! Stop!

Use the GNU Scientific Library. It is free. And legal! And there is a free book on it. Use anything but NR.
