Not a diet book; a way of life!

This is an enjoyable and cleverly written book about losing weight. This is not a diet book, but rather a way to look at your personal approach to how you eat and why you sabotage yourself every day with what you choose to eat and how much food you consume.

The author has personally lived with a weight problem, so the book reflects her personal experience in battling her own weight loss demons.

To help you review a topic that is pertinent to your weight problem, the book is divided into descriptive chapters such as: "The Power Of Choice," "But I Would Rather Not Exercise," and "Life Will Always Give Us Reasons to Use Food." At the end of each chapter are questions for the reader to review and answer in a personal journal to help with daily motivation.

This is a great book to help make lifestyle changes to loose those extra pounds you have been carrying around for way too long!!!

A wonderful approach!

Enjoyable, poignant, but most of all extremely helpful! I found this book to be well-written, thought-provoking and it truly has made a difference in my approach to food. This is not a "diet book" per se, but an effective tool to manage my weight, by teaching me how to better understand my needs and wants. It taught me not to use food as a substitute for the things that I truly desire. It has helped me to respect myself and manage my eating and my life in general. Kudos to Ms. Hausmann for her masterful book..I highly recommend it!

Wake up from your own food spell.

The Tale of Eating Beauty might look like a "quick read", but don't be tempted to sit down and finish it in an evening or two. If you "become the main character" and take Madge's journey with her by keeping a journal, answering the questions she is asked to think about, and doing her "homework" along with her, you will gain valuable insights that will help you understand more about yourself, your overeating, your motivations, and your life. I could even see doing this with a few others, using the book to guide weekly group discussions.

I found the book especially valuable in that the ideas presented can be used with any healthy eating plan you choose for yourself. I also found the two calming and centering exercises very easy to incorporate into my daily life. Additionally, though we've all heard about eating mindfully, actually trying the book's suggestions on how to eat slowly, with intention, can really change your life with food forever.

Engravings tell the story

Imagine a complete history of architecture where every building looks like it belongs on the back of a dollar bill. Nothing but engravings, around 750, all works of art in themselves. And you'll enjoy the exemplary design and the high quality paper.

A wasted opportunity

The idea to write an account of architectural styles and features using old engravings was an excellent one. Unfortunately this book is badly let down by not crediting and giving bibliographical reference to the sources of the fine engravings used. This is tremendously frustrating for readers like myself who are interested in seeking out the original publications and, in many cases, accessing better quality versions of the engravings which are poorly reproduced in this book. Some of the reproduced illustrations have been so much reduced in size that valuable detail is lost. The plans of ancient Beijing are a case in point. No indication is provided of buildings which have been destroyed or seriously damaged since the original 18th and 19th century artwork was produced. Neither are fanciful reconstructions differentiated from existing buildings in the antiquarian illustrations. Moreover, buildings are often shown without identifying them specifically. This fatally flawed publication is not a patch on Banister Fletcher's 'A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method.'

Paul Meier, MD is the author or co-author of more than 90 books that have sold more than seven million copies in more than 30 languages. He is also the founder of the national chain of nonprofit Meier Clinics. He is a graduate of the Duke University Psychiatry Residency and is also an ordained minister and graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught for 12 years. He has traveled around the world teaching Christian Psychology, and has appeared on hundreds of national radio and television programs, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, the Tom Snyder Show, Norman Vincent Peale’s program, and on Radio Free Europe.

What is a psychiatrist doing writing a book about experiencing God outside the box? Thousands of our Meier Clinics clients eventually ask our 100+ psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists spiritual questions that will be addressed in this book. If you have doubts and lots of unanswered questions about God, then, in my opinion, that makes the real God who created you very happy, because you are making good use of the heart and brain he gave you when he created you in his spiritual image.

To have no doubts or questions about God is to be spiritually lazy, because you have passively accepted whatever the authorities in your environment taught you, or you are assuming that your Heavenly Father is merely a grand photocopy of your earthly father, a mistake most people make to some extent. Even your genetic makeup and brain chemistry distort your view of God, of others, of yourself, and even of life itself. You think you have a personal relationship with the real God who created this expanding universe, and you may. But your relationship might very well be with a God In The Box, with many of the influences and pat answers you have been told and passively accepted without thinking it through.

Stop and think about this concept for a moment: If you ask seven billion strangers to tell you what they think the real God of this universe is really like, you will get some views of God that are similar, but each will be uniquely somewhat different. The fact that seven billion people have seven billion differing views of God proves that not a single one of them can be completely correct. Think about that, because that also proves that your view of God as well as my own view cannot possibly be 100 percent correct and our views are certainly not 100 percent comprehensive. We only know a small fraction of what we can know about him until we spend time with him in person in Heaven.

The purpose of this book is not to take away anyone’s faith in God, but rather to assist you in the most noble and spiritually rewarding of all earthly tasks---experiencing God outside the box. This means seeing him more closely, in an accurate picture, after reading this book. It also means growing more intimate with God than you already are now while basing your relationship partially or largely on how you have been programmed to see him and know him.

About the Author
David Greenberg is a historian of American politics and a professor of history and of journalism and media studies at Rutgers University. He is the author of the prize-winning Nixon’s Shadow: The History of an Image, among other books. Currently a columnist for Politico, he has been an editor at Slate and the New Republic and has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and other popular and scholarly publications. He lives with his family in New York City.

Fascinating Book

This is an interesting book, tracing the history of political information from its origins as "news" through its devolution to publicity to propaganda to the current spin. It covers the expected subjects beginning with TR through Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, JFK, Johnson, Reagan, Bush 2 and Obama, and traces their efforts - with varying degrees of success - to set up "official" news outlets. But where the book excels is its discussion of a large number of lesser-known cast of characters, both inside and outside of government, who either assisted their respective presidents in their election campaigns or to frame the news in the best light once elected.

The book concludes with a brief discussion of whether or not spin is a good thing: "Large-scale deception, perpetrated without countervailing arguments, could erode the standards by which we establish truth and falsehood and undermine democracy. But politics would be sterile if it didn't allow a wide berth for claims that were partial, rhetorical, aligned with particular visions and interests, or less than fully truthful by philosophical standards."

Essential reading

Sweeping, authoritative, and chock-full of terrific stories, Republic of Spin should be required reading for any politician, press consultant, or citizen interested in how image-making and public communications play into the ways U.S. presidents run, win, and govern. Greenberg's fast-paced and engrossing narrative shows how media and political spin shaped politics long before the age of the 24-hour news cycle. He also introduces a vivid cast of communications wizards behind the curtain, whose words and actions redefined the relationship that the media--and the voters--had with the occupants of the Oval Office. A definitive and important book.

A culled set of history that’s hard to find summarized anywhere else

What is the correct role of the media in national politics? Does government propagandize the electorate or enlighten them? Will it allow us to scale up traditional New England town democracy to a national level, or create a society of conformists, eventually marching in lock step to disaster? Historically, how malleable has the public been? What was the media's role in advancing Vietnam and the civil rights movement? When does taking advantage of and playing the media cross the line into misuse?

And what of the media in society? Could it empower the lowest common denominator and institute the “tyranny of the majority” through demagoguery? Is it even possible to be objective?, since no single person can know all (even reasonable) points of view on a major issue. Starting at a certain level of abstraction, is truth simply a matter of spin and bias? And when the media has what one regards as biased reporting – is it due to an honest bias?, or does it come from the dictates of the outlet owner on which positions their writers should be hired for or favor?

Given the role of the internet in articulately advancing so many opinions at odds with each other – in the future will it be possible to even produce consensus about anything meaningful?

I have previous purchased and tried to make my way through several books featuring Edward Bernays (Propaganda, Crystallizing Public Opinion, The Father of Spin). Past the first few chapters of nicely summarized insight I found them to become so full of routine minutia and pontification that they lost my interest.

“The Republic of Spin” traces the role of the media (newspapers, radio, TV), starting with Teddy Roosevelt’s administration. The vast majority of the book held me spellbound, with well thought out prose - ways of explaining and summing up. Only towards the end with the George W Bush and Obama administrations did it (sort of) start skimming and falling short of other books (like Frank Rich’s “The Great Story Ever Sold”) . A frank analysis of what is termed “political correctness” - in light of statistics on social pathology (our present day elephant in the room, our third rail of politics) is also missing. None-the-less, this book presents a culled set of history that’s hard to find summarized anywhere else. Five stars.

Not Ready For Prime Time

The number one problem with this book is that it was self-published and did not undergo a formal editorial process. English is not the author's first language and, while I am sensitive to that, if you are going to write a technical book in English, it should be proofread and edited for the proper use of English. The reader will encounter an unusually large amount spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors per page that will make reading this book difficult and slow-going. Additionally, the code samples were not reviewed either and the reader will again encounter numerous typos, redundant code, and unused code.

Second on my list is that it seems that the book does not know who its audience is and so, it has material in it that some readers will find irrelevant, while other readers will find that the book is lacking. Being that this is a book about developing widgets for the web, it would be reasonable to assume that the reader already has strong knowledge of (X)HTML and CSS, and has already been writing JavaScript to enhance their web pages. Yet much of the book talks about elements of the web that are so fundamental that anyone with this skill set would find mind numbing. The book makes the assumption that your widget will be hosted by a public 3rd party host and that you are writing the widget for personal gain. As such, a GREAT DEAL of the book is devoted to discussing building widgets to be hosted by or used within: Google, Facebook, Microsoft Live, Twitter, etc. There's even an appendix dealing with how to promote and make money from your widget, which hardly seems relevant to a book on developing a widget. One small paragraph explains that widgets in the Enterprise will surely be in the future and that's it. There is no more discussion of Enterprise development.

Because the author doesn't take into account who the audience for this book is, there is a great deal of superfluous information in the book and the book is very disorganized. It takes 108 pages before the first example of how to create a widget appears, with the first 107 pages being largely irrelevant to the development process. Some of it could and should have been placed in later chapters and still much of it could have been removed completely. Chapter 6, in particular ("Developing a Rating Widget with JSON and AJAX") really feels like it should be in the appendix as a case study, rather than "here's how the pro's do it", which is what you think you're going to get, but then don't. As one other reviewer pointed out, this book has no index, which is very strange for any technical book. But, this book doesn't really have enough actual technical content to warrant an index. So, the problem isn't that there's no index, the problem is that there isn't enough "meat" to warrant one.

Page 3 of the book talks about the book's support websites. One site is presented as a live look at one of the widgets covered in the book and is described as being a "popular web widget service". The site is unavailable when I try to access it. The other site is the book's support page, which, rather than being broken up into logical sub-pages (errata, source code, sample chapters), is posted all in one very long page, that appears to use AJAX to call for more content as you get close to the bottom of the page. This causes a "never ending" page feeling and worse, clicking anywhere on the page produces an "Out of memory" error. Additionally, the sample code presented on that page has non-ASCII character symbols appearing within it in several spots.

Although there is some good information here and there, I cannot recommend this edition of this book. Hopefully, the book will be revamped, the content will be professionally edited and the material will be honed to be more relevant to the needs of the reader.

more proof reading please this deserves more care

this is a very useful book for beginners using json and other standards based languages to build widgets for the web. the book itself is easy to read and absorb, but the kindle version which i'm reading has tons of mistakes. Within the 1st chapter it wrongly explans the dom as the domain object model. Code is in the wrong case which if entered as is would genorate syntax errors such as using an uppercase 'V' to declare a variable in flash's actionscript language. i think this error is proably due to the way the book has been converted but still more effort should have gone into a product. In summary good solid content easy to understand and implement in your own projects, just unfortunate it needs more proof reading to be really great.

Great book worth buying, but still needs a revision to clean up the spelling and grammar errors

I really like the book and I got a lot out of it. I found the book so good that despite the drawbacks listed below I rate the book 4 stars. This should really be a 5 star book. Unlike other reviewers I didn't find the beginning to be "full of buzzwords". I found it to be a nice, slow and steady introduction to the development of widgets. I thought the Security chapter was especially useful and I liked the appendix "Understanding the Business Model of Web Widget" and the chapter on developing widgets for Facebook. I found them to be quite thought-provoking. They provide a good overview and discussion on the topics.

After reading this book I feel like I wouldn't have any trouble developing widgets of any sort; and that's what it's all about; just what I was looking for.

While reading this book I was in contact with the author several times and I find that to be a nice benefit. He was helpful and responsive.

Cons:

Apparently the first edition of this book was riddled with typos and grammar errors. I'm reviewing the "fully revised and updated" 2nd edition of this book. Despite being fully revised and updated, I find the second edition also has plenty of typos and grammar errors. Unfortunately there are plenty of places where the errors make the book hard to understand. It took me 10 seconds to find an example of what I'm talking about. Here's the exact line:

Not only do I expect something like a colon at the end of that sentence, I expect to see the update data part. Instead I see a new section titled "Rating Value".

I went to the support site for the book and was unable to find the source code to download despite a diligent look. I also found a main link that returned a 404 error.

A lot of the diagrams didn't make sense to me. I ended up mostly ignoring them unless it seemed very important to grock them.

Summary: Despite the drawbacks of the editing, this book was worth it to me.

Dr. Peter Pruzan is Professor Emeritus at the�Department of Management, Politics & Philosophy, Copenhagen Business School (CBS) in Denmark. He was born and raised in the United States, holds degrees from Princeton (B.Sc.), Harvard (MBA), Case-Western Reserve (PhD), and the University of Copenhagen (Sc.D.). He is a naturalised Danish citizen. Peter Pruzan�has been the president of a successful, innovative, international consultancy and held professorships at the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Copenhagen and CBS. He spends roughly half of each year abroad, primarily in India, where he mentors PhD students on Research Methodology.�

Director's On The Line.

I've read 'Making Movies' for my 'Visual Communication' class, in which we examined visual sources that ranged from pictorial representations to actual films. I must admit, however, that the book was a real joy to read, and Lumet a master to know closely.
As the other reviewers have mentioned, Lumet's style makes it easy for everyone to understand and get a grasp of what it takes to shoot a movie, from reading a scenario, to bringing together a cast, from dealing with actors to trying to stay within the budget. The book's procession is designed in such a way, that your curiosity increases as you flip through the chapters. (You begin to wonder if the film's going to get ready in time.)
Lumet, as the director of many films, should be considered as a real master in the film industry. He has worked with important actors such as Sean Connery frequently, and succeeded in putting together remarkable films, like 'Twelve Angry Men'. He tells the audience exactly how he's felt and what he's thought during the making of the movies. He expresses the stress he's had when the actors did not show up on time, when the weather conditions changed dramatically or when the production company announced to cut off a significant portion of the film budget. He also depicts his delight when he's got astonishing performance from his actors and actresses, when the cameraman managed to do a better job than he had even planned. His telling of these remarks are inspiring, indeed.
'Making Movies' is a great source, although not necessarily a technical source, for all people either working or interested in the film world. A wonderful book to both read and have in shelf.

Bought for the wrong reason...still worth it

A friend recommended this book saying, "I'm not sure you want to learn about making movies, but this is a great project management book."
Well...I could see his point, but I didn't feel the same way about the book. There's a thin thread throughout about the way Lumet conducts his movie project, most evident in the book's best chapter (7) entitled "Shooting the Movie: At Last!" The pieces of the puzzle all fall together at that point, and you get a true sense of everyone's responsibilities and how Lumet plans and uses these resources. So yeah, that's project management.
But if you're going to buy this book, buy it because you're interested in how movies get made, starting right from how a script is chosen, through to the preview. From that perspective, it's a great book. Again, in the book's best chapter, you get a sense for just how draining - and unglamourous - it is to actually shoot the movie. Early pick-ups, lots of work with stand-ins to get the set (esp. lighting) right, multiple takes, late-night viewing of rushes. This is tough work, and Lumet describes it clear, concise language. And he pulls no punches as to where his frustrations lay in the process.
Roger Ebert's cover blurb states "I am sometimes asked if there is one book a filmgoer could read to learn more about how movies are made and what to look for while watching them. This is the book." I'd say that's a very accurate summation of what you'll find here.

Okay but not great.

I like Baldacci. I really like protagonists Puller, Decker, and Robie, but I'm not sure I really like this offering in the Amos Decker series. Baldacci always writes a book that instantly grabs you and then you pretty much hold on for dear life for the rest of the story. This one grabs you but then makes you loosen your grip when the dialog goes on and on and on with much of the same information being repeated over and over again. There are the usual crew of agents, some fleshed out a bit, some left behind and DIA Agent Brown adds some interest and life to the story but I have to say I got to the point where I didn't care if Decker solved the case or not. The story lagged at times and the action scenes who implausible and sometimes just plain silly. Amos seems to be softening, and his quirky, Aspberger type behaviors were less evident which, to me, is an injustice to Decker's character. Succeeding despite not adhering to the usual social conventions made Decker endearing in a funny sort of way. I miss his struggle. I miss his courage. I miss his awkward vulnerability.

A Good Entry Into the Series

The Fix -David Baldacci

This is a very good entry in a great series. I just wish that the series remained as good as the first book had been. This series still has potential so I am not going to give up on it.

I really recommend that you read at least the first book in this series before you tackle this one---in fact since there are only three books I would say go for reading both earlier books before reading this one. HOWEVER, you don’t HAVE to read the earlier books to get into this one – it will just make it easier on you to understand Amos Decker’s quirks and fantastical ability.

This book is total mystery with a slight dash of fantasy thrown in. A theft of our Countries secrets, spying, hacking, espionage, Russia- Middle East, murder and a story line a little too close to home/the truth for my taste! In the first book, we find how Amos came to have his ‘abilities’ and he goes from a cardboard box living, shell of a man, to this book where he is a successful part of a team that is part of the FBI and making friends. (with the possibility of a girl-friend I think!)

What slightly bothered me about this book is the fact that it (in my opinion of course) could have lost about one hundred pages of dead-horse beating, repetitive conversation that I am sure if you are in the business of crime fighting, is important but for the average reader is just annoying. I needed a tad more action and a tad less wash-rinse-repeat.

There is also one brief story-line and action sequence that I don’t see how it made the main story move forward -but perhaps this was a set-up for a future story-line.

Not a bad book at all, but not my favorite by far.

A fine piece of writing

Amos Decker is a fascinating character with great talents and insights. But he's also flawed in ways that are unfathomable to the "normal" (whatever that is) people around him. They don't begin to understand him. He's a total enigma.

The storyline is complex. Alex hauls us all along, giving us a glimpse into his extraordinary thought processes as he peels away the lies and half-truths that confound the rest of us. The murky shadows of the FBI and DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) don't disappear, but their methods set the scene for their all-too human and vulnerable counterparts to deal with the consequences of their own actions and the actions of those who came before.

I recommend "The Fix" to any reader who likes spiderweb plots and unique characterization.
