We really needed something like this.
By Swank Ivy
I'm one of those embarrassingly huge fans of this show so it was kind of a given that I was going to love this book. But let me tell y'all why it's good and why it's important.

This is Ruby and Sapphire's story of love and freedom. I think we all know that a children's storybook that's about a "she" falling in love with a "she" is bound to get some raised eyebrows in a world that thinks relationships like theirs can never be innocent, but I would prefer not to focus on that much at all. I just want to say that it's so vital that children see these relationships in the same context that they see cross-sex relationships--and it's not JUST so kids who have same-sex crushes and attractions can see themselves and know they can get fairy tale endings too. It's also for the rest of you--and if those of you who aren't queer can imagine growing up with no books about people like you, you might start to get the idea.

But you might not be able to really understand, because you probably CAN'T imagine how devastating it is--when there don't seem to be nice words that describe you, or when futures for people like you don't seem to exist, or when you want to know where you are in the literature people get upset, or when people talk to you like it either doesn't matter that you're invisible or that you're disgusting for wanting that. We want to be in stories because stories are how humanity talks to itself. If we aren't in them, we also learn very young that we don't truly get to participate in human life.

So I want to say thank you to everyone who made it possible for something like this to exist. I'm so happy, but also relieved--and a little exasperated that something this sweet and pure took this long to get here because some people look at it and don't see it for what it it is.

So what is it?

Yes, this story features the beginning of the love between Ruby and Sapphire, though it still doesn't really delve into that. We see very little of their time together. We see them both being sort of in awe of each other--Ruby being amazed that Sapphire would want to be around someone like her when she's an aristocrat and has amazing powers to see beyond time, and Sapphire being amazed that Ruby's courage upended what she thought was inevitable--and we get a peek at the way they look at each other.

What we do see more of is their decision to become a Fusion together--the ability the Gem characters have to meld into each other and become another person who represents their relationship. (But also the new Gem will have her own thoughts and feelings, her own new appearance, and her own attitude built from what her component Gems inspire in each other.) In Sapphire and Ruby's story, I think the Fusion relationship is a unique one--not just because she was the first of her kind in her society, but because the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire is now forever changed by how they feel about becoming another entity together. They will eventually fully love each other, but that love will always be influenced by what they've experienced as a Fusion.

And everything about their relationship is about possibility, opportunity, novelty, freshness, and power. Rubies in Gem society are supposed to be simple soldiers who do what they're told and fight with their comrades. Sapphires in Gem society are supposed to be wise seers who don't let their emotions affect what happens next. When Ruby made a choice that Rubies aren't supposed to make, Sapphire helplessly watched a future develop that wasn't in the plan. And both of them found what they'd rather be instead. I really appreciate that there was such a strong "supposed to" that the characters challenged without quite meaning to, and that leaving what they were accustomed to did cause them some distress. They had to find something new to be now that Ruby couldn't do what Rubies do and Sapphire couldn't do what Sapphires do. They realized there are multiple "supposed to's" for Gems like them, and fusing together into someone who had no "supposed to's" (because she wasn't supposed to exist) must have made it so much more joyous to explore what lay ahead.

The art is pretty special--lots of unsettling images (though nothing too scary), lots of beautiful images, and a different style from the cartoon--it's simplified and stylized, but it still gets plenty of emotion onto those little faces. The backgrounds are lovely as they generally are in the show, and the characters commenting on the text in a meta fashion and talking to each other from little alcoves (Sapphire above, Ruby below) was really powerful. There's narration, but there's also Sapphire and Ruby saying how they felt about what was happening, and expressing opinions about each other's statements and caring about each other's distress. Eventually, they go into each other's chambers, comment on how they feel, and share their perspectives. It seems simple but it's quite a nuanced metaphor and I think a lot of children will understand it despite the complexity.

Speaking of complexity, there are some concepts here that I think render this book most appropriate for people who have context from watching the TV show. The fusion concept isn't presented all that accessibly to new fans, and if you haven't seen the show before you don't know that when Gems' physical form is destroyed, they reform later (if their Gem isn't smashed). You don't get introduced to Pearl even though she's there, and you have no context for the illustration of Blue Diamond (and her Pearl), and even though Garnet is mentioned in the online description of the book, she's not called by name in the story itself (just like in the episode). It's also a little unclear in the book (but not the cartoon) why the other Gems were furious at them for fusing, but I guess the story had to be kept simple. There's also some complex language in the book--vocabulary words children in the target group probably won't see in school for a few more years--but the presentation makes me think they will have context to pick it up. I remember doing that a lot as a kid with children's books that slipped in an advanced word here and there.

I was hoping for a couple things I didn't get, but I don't blame books for not fulfilling expectations they didn't promise to fulfill. I was really hoping to hear a little more about the moment of Sapphire and Ruby's first fusion, because in the show fusion is supposed to be about being on the same wavelength, and it seemed almost incongruous that they could have fused at that moment amidst all that confusion. If they did, they must have temporarily wanted the same thing. I know what Ruby wanted--to save Sapphire--but I would have loved to see a glimpse of Sapphire wanting to be saved rather than just being sort of blindsided by the rescue. I would have been really interested to see more of that moment of escape into their unheard-of spontaneous relationship--the action that changed who they were figuratively and literally (not to mention saving the planet).

The overall package is really precious and looks the way it should--like an age-appropriate, fairy-tale-esque storybook that doesn't have anything strange or inappropriate at all. I can't even imagine reading this to a child and having them stop me to ask "wait, ARE THEY TWO GIRLS??" because it's just so smooth and well told, and the characters' casually presented embraces and nonchalant closeness uses the same cues we'd expect to see on a Disney princess dancing with her prince. It's just Not. An. Issue. Not in the book. Outside of the book, I imagine it will be. I hope the hubbub it creates is primarily positive.

And now, of course, it's made even more clear in this book that Garnet doesn't ask questions in the show because Rose told her not to and she took it quite literally. (She seems to get around asking questions with tricky wording, though, like instead of "What did you see?" she'll say "Tell me what you saw.") If you already ARE the answer, what questions could you need to ask?

And I've got to say Rebecca Sugar dedicating the book to Ian Jones-Quartey is really sweet.

This book is so beautiful, honestly
By the captain
This book is so beautiful, honestly. My favorite part about the book is that Ruby and Sapphire show up on the top and bottom of every page and as the story progresses, both end up leaving their boxes and moving around and fusing, it's adorable! I thought this would be more of the size of the typical little golden books but it's bigger than I thought which is awesome. The art direction is incredible and new and refreshing (much like Ruby and Sapphire's fusion) and it's definitely a unique book in its own right. A must have for any fan.

Gay kids books make me so very happy
By Jessica
OMG I pre-ordered this and me and my GAY WIFE just SQUEALED WITH JOY when it arrived! The book is so cute, at the top Sapphire has a box and Ruby has one at the bottom and they give little comments throughout the story from their own perspectives. I love it when everything changes and Sapphire can't see the future anymore! and I'm proud to have a book like this in my collection as a gay mom with a kid! I want him to see so much variety in love! Also the book is larger and thicker than the typical "little golden book" style.

The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell

Much more than a simple horror story. Richard Connell wants us to question the very idea of civilization and what it means to be a civilized human. General Zaroff may have sophisticated conversations, wear formal London-tailored evening clothes, and speak three languages—but he also hunts down other human beings like animals. And that's partly because he doesn’t see any difference between humans and animals. (Well, that, and he's a nutso psychopath.) He claims that he doesn't hunt other civilized beings: he hunts the “cast-offs” of the world, as he calls them, “sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels--a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them."

About the Author
Richard Edward Connell Jr. (1893 – 1949) was an American author and journalist, probably best remembered for his short story "The Most Dangerous Game". Connell was one of the most popular American short story writers of his time. He had equal success as a journalist and screenwriter and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1942 for best original story.

From AudioFile
Ziggurat Productions employs multiple voices to tell this haunting classic short story about a hunter becoming the hunted. Accomplished big-game hunter Sanger Rainsford is washed ashore on a South American island owned by General Zaroff, a maniacal sportsman whose quarry is the two-legged kind. When Rainsford finds himself the prey of the madman, he must kill or be killed. The readings are quite good, and the story is enhanced by appropriately menacing music. The script sticks fairly close to the original tale, with only minor enhancements and additions, and a shift in the narrative voice. A masterfully crafted edge-of-your-seat thriller.
By Christian Engler
Winner of the 1924 O. Henry Memorial Prize for Best Short Story (the Pulitzer Prize for stories) The Most Dangerous Game, also known as "The Hounds of Zaroff," is quite a thrilling and twisting read, a work consisting of approximately 34 pages, give or take, depending on the edition you choose from.

In the dead of night, two men, Whitney and Sanger Rainsford (no relation), who are both avid hunters, are on a yacht. Sanger is a noted author on hunting and somewhat of a playboy. The two are looking at what appears to be an isolated island ominously nicknamed Ship-Trap Island. While looking out, they discuss the game of hunting and briefly the ethics of it, analyzing the concept of fear and death that animals must surely sense when they are caught in the range of the hunter's guns. While Whitney is more sympathetic and open-minded of what the animals must sense, Sanger is indifferent, saying only, ""...Who cares what a jaguar feels. Bah! They've no understanding." It is a belief he'll come to regret; they also talk about the territory's supposed evil reputation by way of sailor lore. With the discussion coming to a close, Whitney turns in, thus leaving Rainsford alone on the deck. Mulling over things, Rainsford hears shots coming from the island, and while straining to see better, he loses his balance and falls overboard. Via the current and his own swimming ability, he lands on Ship-Trap Island without anyone on the boat noticing his disappearance.

On the island, he encounters the suave yet diabolical General Zaroff, a man whose passion for hunting surpasses that of his own. However, Zaroff does not hunt animals of the four legged variety. Staying in his opulent and well furnished island manor, Rainsford becomes well rested and unknowingly fattened up, all prep work done by Zaroff who wants his preys to be well nourished and fully energized for the chase; as Zaroff explains his joy at hunting humans to Rainsford, he becomes deathly ill at the inhumanity of it all. Zaroff simply delights in pursuing people who will use their ingenuity, wits and determination to survive. "Throw-away" people, as he sees it, will not be missed, for they were created for the pleasure of the strong. He looks at people the way hunters look at animals. It is just that black and white with nothing in between. Being a hazy witness to one of these hunts, Rainsford immediately wants off the island, but it's just not that easy, for he has to partake of the horror like all the others if he wants his freedom. And chances are, with Zaroff's acute hunting ability, he will not leave, for Zaroff's hunting record is 100% perfect, no losses whatsoever. Can Rainsfords survive the three days of open hunting with a maniac who knows all and assumedly sees all? That's the thing.

The Most Dangerous Game was a thought-provoking read, because it can be applied to all aspects of hunting and trying to quench the endless thirst of that which we most want, be it power, materialism, sex, vanity, money, a laundry list attached to the human psyche that can be endlessly yearning and strategizing but never fulfilled.

As far as the story, suffice it to say this is one of my favorite short stories. There are plenty of other reviews available concerning the content of the story, so I concern myself primarily with the presentation on the kindle.

Having first tried the other version available, The Most Dangerous Game - New Century Edition with DirectLink Technology, and finding that it had an unwelcome abundance of typos, I downloaded this version instead. Unlike the other version, this version actually breaks the text into paragraphs, this very welcome and make the story much more pleasant to read. There are two notes built in to the story as editorial comments on what certain words mean. Although these comments are unnecessary to the understanding of the story, they are not unwelcome. The biggest plus is that I haven't noticed typos in this version like I did in the other version.

Overall, I think formatting is well done and works perfectly for the kindle. If you want to purchase this story for your kindle buy this version.

P.S. There is another reviewer of the kindle edition that mentions some of the text disappearing. I have not experienced this problem. It's possible this problem did exist and was fixed, but the problem isn't there anymore.

A moralistic classic of fiction.

The short story is out of print, but can be found in:
The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction Sixth Edition / W.W. Norton & Company Available through www.amazon.com
I was required to read this story as part of my mandatory college curriculum. I found the story very intriguing and spotted with divine wisdom. The story views hunting and obsession in a new light. The story was written in 1924, but still feels modern showing the author's stretch for new thinking. I do not find the author's prose to be very smooth or grammatically perfect, but he does have something to say.
If your looking for a good collection of short stories to read, I recommend reading 'The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction'

Little Green: A Memoir of Growing Up During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, by Chun Yu

In this stunning, lyrical memoir that includes a curriculum guide, author Chun Yu recalls the Chinese Cultural Revolution from the perspective of a ten-year-old.

When Chun Yu was born in a small city in China, she was born into a country in revolution. The streets were filled with roaming Red Guards, the walls were covered with slogans, and reeducation meetings were held in all workplaces. Every family faced danger and humiliation, even the youngest children.

Shortly after Chun’s birth, her beloved father was sent to a peasant village in the countryside to be reeducated in the ways of Chairman Mao. Chun and her brother stayed behind with their mother, who taught in a country middle school where Mao’s Little Red Book was a part of every child’s education. Chun Yu’s young life was witness to a country in turmoil, struggle, and revolution—the only life she knew.

“True to a child’s bewildered viewpoint and augmented by occasional, small black-and-white family photos” (Booklist), this memoir, complete with a curriculum guide, is a stunning account of a country in crisis and a testimony to the spirit of the individual— no matter how young or how innocent.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–Xiao Qing, or Little Green, was born at the very beginning of the Cultural Revolution, and when she turned 10, Chairman Mao died. Because her father worked in the city before he was sent to the countryside for re-education and her mother taught first in a country school and later in the city, Little Green and her two siblings lived much of their younger years with their grandmother. This memoir, written as poetry, chronicles her daily life and reveals her perceptions of the world. Her story is revealed in snippets, much the way one remembers scenes from the distant past. The earlier poems reflect the emotions and fears of a young child while the later poems show an increasing awareness of the meaning of what is taking place. While poetry is an excellent vehicle for a memoir of this sort, the verse itself is uneven in quality. The author is at her best when describing life in the country where many of her depictions of the natural world are lyrical and full of beauty. The form works less well in the more narrative parts, where the poetry is not far removed from prose. Ji-Li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (HarperCollins, 1997) and Da Chen's China's Son (Delacorte, 2001) also tell the story of young people living through this era. What makes Little Green slightly different is the younger age of the protagonist and the immediacy of the experience provided by the poetry. As such, it complements and extends those more substantial narratives.–Barbara Scotto, Michael Driscoll School, Brookline, MA

From Booklist
Gr. 7-10. Chun Yu was born in China in 1966, the year the Great Cultural Revolution began, and in spare poetry she remembers the first 10 years of her life. True to a child's bewildered viewpoint and augmented by occasional, small black-and-white family photos, Yu gets across the grief at home and the school indoctrination. She feels her father's depression; plays war games against "Foreign Devils"; hears Mama defend her rich, dead parents; and sees intellectuals sent for "reeducation." Telling one person's story is often a compelling way to introduce politics, but because children won't know much of the history here, they may be frustrated by the vignettes, which provide only glimpses of the national terror and upheaval. A brief epilogue will help by providing some context about growing up "half blind to and half aware of the glory of the cause and the cruelty of the reality." So will pairing this with Ki-li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (1997) or Ange Zhang's Red Land, Yellow River [BKL D 1 04], also about the cultural revolution Hazel Rochman

Review
""Little Green" is a miracle-such beauty emerging from the chaos of the Cultural Revolution. A clear-eyed child is born into a surrealistic China, and tells her story. Chun Yu's poetry creates sense and order that readers young and old, Eastern and Western, will appreciate."

A beautifully written story - not just for young readers
By Michael Shapiro
It's one thing to read the history of China's Cultural Revolution, quite another to see it through the eyes of a little girl who lived through it. In "Little Green," Chun Yu, born the year the Cultural Revolution began (1966), chronicles the first ten years of her life, from the revolution's inception to its ending with Mao's death.

What's startling about "Little Green" - the title comes from Yu's childhood nickname - is not just the vivid clarity of her memories but the beauty of her words. Written in verse, the book has the crystalline luminosity of Peter Matthiessen's prose and David Whyte's poetry. On one page Yu will speak eloquently of the gift of a blue silk ribbon; on another she'll share her pain - without being overly sentimental - at having her family's garden torn out after the state decided that private gardens were capitalistic.

"After a whole spring and early summer
of planting and watering,
the tomatoes were just starting to ripen under the green leaves.
Some melon flowers were still blooming on the fence.
The biggest melons had grown to the size of my little fists.
The sunflowers along the roadside
were only a couple of feet tall,
with tender yellow flowers following the sun around.
Nainai [Grandma] sighed.
'It hurts the conscience to destroy these crops.
What crime did the plants commit?' "

In this slender volume, Yu shows how her family is affected by the Cultural Revolution. Her mother, a teacher, becomes a target of the anti-intellectual movement; her father is sent for several years to a reeducation camp. In "We Saw Baba Only Twice a Year," Yu writes:

"Baba lived in May Seventh Cadre School,
where he was being reeducated.
The cadre school could only be reached by boat,
slowly moved by a long bamboo stick.
It took a whole day each way.
We saw Baba only twice a year,
in the summertime
and Chinese New Year.
After not seeing him for a long time,
it felt so strange to call him 'Baba' again."

The cover quote, from Maxine Hong Kingston, calls "Little Green" a "miracle" which initially sounded a bit over the top. But as I read the book and learned Yu's story, I didn't find this to be an exaggeration. For someone who learned English as an adult and spent much of her time in this country studying science, "Little Green," written with elegant simplicity in English, truly is miraculous.

I found "Little Green" so enjoyable that I began rationing it, reading just a few pages a night, to make it last. Thankfully, this is the first book of a trilogy, and Yu says she's already finished the second volume. I'll eagerly await its publication. Until then, I'll return often to Little Green's clear, bright lines.

Great for all ages
By whirled traveler
I really enjoyed reading Chun Yu's "Little Green." It gives a unique perspective of the Chinese cultural revolution from a young child's view, but at the same time explores very mature themes of cultural and personal identity. As a student of history, this book gave me a new understanding of the crazy times of the cultural revolution -- while creating a sense of beauty and wonder through the free verse structure of the book. I'd highly recommend it.

Little Green is a wondrous work of art!
By Michael Wong
Little Green is a wondrous work of art, like an ancient Chinese painting brought forward into modern time. Where a Western painter might fill up the entire canvas with paint, traditional Chinese painters used sparse brush strokes to vividly illuminate the very essence of their subject. So does Chun Yu use her poetry to bring to life the world of a ten year old child in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Like the unfolding of a Chinese scroll, to read her verse is to journey across the landscape of that time. We see her family, other children, revolutionaries and "counter-revolutionaries," political struggle meetings, war trainings, cold streams, warm meals, forbidden ancient poetry, and the sound of snowflakes falling past her ear.

Little Green is suitable for all ages, both children and adults. From her readings in the San Francisco bay area, I also learned that this book is the first in a coming trilogy. I give it five stars.

The Complete Pompeii (The Complete Series), by Joanne Berry

A gloriously illustrated and comprehensive survey of the most famous ancient site in the world.

The dramatic story of Pompeii's destruction has been handed down to us by Roman writers, its paintings and mosaics have astonished visitors since their discovery in the eighteenth century, and its houses and public buildings to this day present a vivid picture of life, disaster, and death in a Roman town.

Pompeii is not quite a time capsule, a frozen moment in history, but it is probably the closest we will ever get to one. This up-to-date new survey draws on evidence produced at the cutting edge of modern archaeological research, revealing how the evidence for life in this city was first uncovered, and how archaeologists over the centuries have unpeeled the layers that enable us to reconstruct Pompeii's history.

With its lavish illustrations, covering monumental architecture and inscriptions, shops, graffiti, wall-paintings, and mosaics, plus its numerous box features ranging from theatrical entertainments to water supply, The Complete Pompeii is the ultimate resource and inspirational guide to this iconic ancient town.

Among the many topics covered:
  • How Pompeii was destroyed in the eruption of AD 79
  • What we know of the lives and deaths of its inhabitants
  • What the houses tell us about the people who lived in them
  • Who was involved in politics
  • What can be reconstructed about religious practices

Very Complete Pompeii
By Outside Food
This book summarizes everything you ever wanted to know about Pompeii, with chapters on the story of the eruption, history of excavations, origins of the town, Pompeiians' daily lives, leadership and politics, housing, religion, economy, and the 16 years between a destructive earthquake and the death of the town. There are over 300 illustrations enabling the reader to visualize what Berry is saying. The information is current as of early 2007, so it includes the latest findings and theories. The author is not squeamish about showing nudity or quoting obscene graffiti, both of which helped archaeologists decipher the daily goings-on in Pompeii.

the complete pompeii
By Bruce
I have to agree with the other reviews about the quality of this book. The publishers have produced several books under a similar title (e.g.'The Complete Tutankhamun'; 'The Complete Valley of the Kings')and all are of a very high quality. This book stands out for several reasons. Firstly, the text is of a high quality - suitable for the general reader, but also for school and university students, and the information is very complete and up-to-date. Secondly, the photographs are again of a very high quality. I think there are no photographs that I have not seen before, but the quality of these is superb - - undoubtedly they have been digitally enhanced. As a teacher, I will be able to use these very effectively to teach about Pompeii, but equally, the general reader will get great enjoyment and some learning because of the quality of them. As I write, I have 26 books besides me about Pompeii and/or Herculaneum. I have no doubt that this is probably the best of them.

An Excellent Account of the Site
By J. Chippindale
If you require information about anything the internet has probably become an unbeatable source of knowledge but for me maybe I am old fashioned there is still nothing to beat a good book and this is a good book. It is full of facts and photographs laid out in such a way that they are interesting to the reader.

The main reason that I personally bought the book was that I had visited the site a dozen years ago and my memories of the place were starting to fade in my mind. As soon as I opened the book and the photographs of various parts of the site shone back at me from the pages, all the old memories flooded back and it was as though I had been there only yesterday. The book covers virtually everything that anyone is likely to want to know about Pompeii nd the surrounding area. Also about how one of the largest archaeological sites in the world is still developing with new things being discovered all the time.

The destruction of Pompeii is well documented, but little is known of the lives of the people who lived in Pompeii before the disaster. This book goes a long way towards telling the story of the unfortunate people who were caught up in one of the worst natural disasters in history. How they lived their lives, the work they did and how they spent their leisure time.

An Excellent Book
By A Customer
It is certainly one of the best books on Fracture Mechanics. The book is very well structured for graduate level courses. Also, unlike a lot of books on Fracture Mechanics, the concepts are presented with an emphasis on their practical applications.

Good Introduction into Fracture Mechanics
By Aroguy
Pros:
Broek is an expert in presenting complex engineering material in a easy to read format. He has struck a nice chord in this book to not drown the reader in complex mathematical derivations, but convey the important aspects and pitfalls. I used this book as a supplement to my graduate level fracture mechanics course. This book in conjunction with his even better book "Practical use of Fracture Mechanics" should serve as a good basis of introduction to fatigue analysis for true practicing professionals.

Cons:
I thought the organization of the material could be a bit different. The presentation of the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics material seem scattered throughout the book. At times there could be more mathematical rigor especially when deriving the crack tip stress and displacement fields. The fractography figures could also be of better resolution given the price of the book, and at times Broek can be very verbose, but that is just his writing style.

Workmanlike
By Brian A. Clarke
Takes you through the basics of fracture mechanics in a systematic way. Good for undergraduate work. Bought it for my daughter - and now she's reminding me of stuff I forgot 40 years ago. When is there to be a later edition?
